new engin with HSR, big problem
Ok, here is the story. 350 bored 30 over by a good shop, new pistons, rings, ect. Got motor running easily first time, did the breakin thing, runns good, sounds good, but seems to use oil. At first I thaught the rings havent seated good yet, but now the motor has 6000 miles on it and it still uses about 1 quart every 1500 miles. I looked at the plugs and they look like they have been burning some oil but not really enough to make them shiney, just black ash buildup on them. Today I took of the top of the HSR, the plenum, and you can see all the way to the valves with this intake. I saw lots of buildup on the valves, ugly oily shxt on them. I also saw a lot of oil in the intake itself. If it were liaking oil that bad from the lifter valley shurley there would be such a vacume leak it wouldnt idle so good. I also see a seady stream of smoke (vapors) comming from the PCV hole in the valve cover. Could that much oil come from the PCV system? The covers have baffles in them. Is it possible that the rings never seated and the oil is somehow blowing the oil into the intake. There is a 4 degres overlap in the cam. I guess i wil have to do a leakdown test to findout for shure in the rings seated. Any one ran into something like this before?

they are some rebuilt oldrer iron heads with larger valves in them. They were newly rebuilt when I installed them. The machine shop also leak tested them.

Does it puff smoke at startup?
Is there any smoke when you put your foot in it?
Oil usage on a new engine is normal, but not with that many miles. The rings are seated, they have been for a while... unless the block wasnt prepped right which I really doubt. Its more likely something else, like a leaking intake, improper PCV setup (baffles in the valve covers are important), or more likely... worn valve guides.
See if you can ask the builder what they did in regards to the valve guides. If you hear the word knurling... you have my condolences.
