mileage problem, very frustrating
well i just bought my car last week and now that i got plates and all i notice that it burns hella gas. i got a 90 firebird v6. I filled her up tuesday and today i had to fill her up again, i can do about 100miles on a full tank , thats it. I do live in new york city but i doubt city driving with get u 8-10 miles a gallon. when i purchased her i saw a bag full of replaced parts, one big bag full of tune up parts, spark plugs , cables etc... even some engine parts. I was thinking i needed a tuneup but it just got one , i went to a mechanic and they told me to try putting some fuel injector cleaner into my tank and hop on the highway . i was asking them about my idle, i tend to idle around 600 and they said the lower the idle the better it is on the gas..is that true? , i dont know what to do now , i filled up my tank im about to go take a nice lil cruise and see how many mpg im getting, i think i know why this person got rid of the bird , im not planning on parting from it, not ne time soon

check out the v6 boards too,i used to have a 88 v6 camaro,it got worse milege than my IROC.the main reason is because i wanted my v6 to respond like a v8,i'd floor it constantly
u have to floor those v6's to get any decent acceleration!since you've had a tune up,i'd check the air filters,O2sensor,egr,tire pressure, also look for gas leaks,i know it sounds crazy but i didn't tighten my fuel filter enough and i had puddles in the driveway.i could never get either of my camaros to idle under 550-600rpm without stalling.Goodluck
