TPS issue, dumb questions - long?

Hey there. Somewhat new to the boards and hoping you all could give me some advice. I am in the process of changing my TPS when in removing the old one, the lower mounting bolt is giving me a hard time. I get it out to find the last 1/8th inch of the bolt is cross threaded. I go to put on the new TPS and lo and behold, the lower bolt will not thread in. Neither the new bolt supplied or the old one that came out. My questions are:

Is there an easier way to get at the bolts other than removing all those hoses?
Is the thread in the TB cross threaded?
If so, can I just tap out the old threads (same size) or will I need to make new threads?
Would I be better off just buying another TB?

I tried to mount the TPS with only the top bolt and works fine till I restart the engine, then it idles real high. Must be the resetting during the restart that makes it idle so high.

Thanks,

Chris

Hello dakleenupman,

First of all, welcome to the board. I don't know about the condition of the threads in your throttle body. But I can tell you an easier way to install and tighten the bolts without removing a lot of hoses. On mine, which is also an 89 Iroc, I can start both screws in the throttle body by hand. To remove them or finish the installation, I use a 1/4" drive breaker bar with a 1/4" x 1/4" socket and the proper torx bit. I also have a 1/4" ratchet with a swivel head that I sometimes use. Both work great and I don't have to remove any hoses. You can sometimes re-dress the threads in a bolt or screw hole by getting a good screw and applying some oil to it and slowly running it in the hole. Make sure that you have the screw (bolt) going in straight. Don't try to rush the job. BTW, new throttle bodies are not cheap.

Thank you for the welcome and the advice. I plan on taking everything on that side that is anywhere close to the TB and replacing as this car has been in storage for many a year. While all that is removed, I plan on installing the TPS to the TB while it is removed from the intake. This way, I will be able to do whatever I need to to adress the thread issue..........
