car running very rich

Well, here's the story. I just swapped from 350 cop car tbi to maf tpi and it's going a little shaky. I have 24lb ford racing fuel injectors, crane adjustable fpr, a hypertech fuel pressure gauge, a brand new walbro fuel pump from racetronix.com, and a 350 chip burned by brian at tpichips.com specifically for the 24lb injectors. The fpr screw is way too long and it comes in contact with my plenum so adjusting it isn't too much fun. When I installed the ford racing fuel injectors, I re-used the stock clips and attached them to the top part of the injector. I noticed they were very loose this way. When bolted down to the plenum, they do make that click sound when they're pushed down and it did seem like its a good fit. However, I can't get my fuel pressure above 40psi on the gauge. I will prime the fuel pump and as soon as it shuts off, it drops from 40 to 10. Also, when I am driving, the fuel smell is so horrible it gives me a headache if i drive it for longer than 10 minutes. There isn't any leaks that I can see on top of the intake from the fuel rail or injectors. But the rich smell is driving me crazy. I don't see why it would be running so rich at 40psi? Any suggestions? Do u think my gauge is screwed up or something? I've read that some people don't use the clips for the ford racing fuel injectors so they'll sit in the fuel rail deeper, but most people do use them. What can I do guys? I'm lost at what I can do. Any help is appreciated.

damn, i got bumped down to the bottom real quick. Well, I actually had the 305 tpi chip from the previous owner and I installed that and it doesn't seem to be running as rich as before but the idle is definitely screwed up. Please someone has to have an answer to this?

I think you need a custom prom to run bigger than stock injectors or it will run rich. That or maybe take that long screw out of your afpr and put in a shorter one so you can back the pressure off even more.

I have the custom prom already. The fuel pressure only makes it to 40. What can I do? Should I just keep backing it off until the fuel smell goes away?

Where did you hear that people use clips on Ford injectors? As far as I know they dont use them at all they just push into the rail (mine did) so you're fine there. Is there a reason why you're using Ford 24# injectors? Chip or no chip they flow alot of fuel (even more than GM 24# injectors due to a different rating method) and you have to compensate by backing fuel pressure way down. This is defeating the purpose of fuel injection which is fuel atomization. You have to either back down the pressure even more which is bad for the above reasons or get some injectors that actually fit the application and run them at higher pressures.

EDIT: Don't ignore shoddy chip burning either. Without having your car on a dyno it's all guesswork and usually the first shot isn't the best one. I think a combination of this and what I mentioned above is what making you run so rich
