What is this, and what does it do?

When I was checking my timing I found this thing and it was missing a line that comes out of the other side of it. Is this thing important?

This is the 2 lines that plug into it.

That is your EGR solenoid, there should be an electrical connector and the two vacuum lines. One for the EGR that goes to the bottom fitting and one that connects to the little nipple underneath the throttle body.that goes in the top opening. What looks like a third fitting is actually a vent. If you have the EGR still installed, you will have problems if it is not connected. You will also have a vacuum leak unless that opening on the throttle body is capped. If you don't already know, that solenoid mounts under the ignition coil.

Nope, it should have a metal clip and a piece of foam rubber there because that is a vent for the solenoid. There isn't a line for it. The only two lines for it are the two you have pictured in the second post.

Ok, I see.

Thanks.

I was just wondering because I think I am having EGR problems becuase my car is not properly idling. I don't know if you have seen my other thread or not, but when I start my car it revs to about 1500-1600 RPM's, them goes down within 5 sec. Then after driving it and I come to a stop it idles at 900 but if I wait about 5 secs it goes down to about 650. Could this be related to an EGR solenoid or ERG problem?

Actually that idle is about normal. It will always idle a little high when it is first started and then drop down after it warms a little. When you come to a stop at a light or somewhere the idle will lower some because there is a load on it. If you sit in your car and put it in gear, you will see the idle drop. So there is nothing drastically wrong there,

OH. I have never seen another car do this though. Is it TPI specific?

I'm not really sure if it is or not. My 89 Iroc goes up to about 1200 on the first start and then drops to about 850. When I put it in gear it drops to about 700. The RPM will also drop when I have the A/C turned on and the car in Park. Have you been getting any code 32's popping up? That is the code for a EGR problem.

Nope I do not get any codes. I also could not be happier with the perfomance of the engine, I just did not think it was supposed to that. You say yours only goes to 1200, I would be extremly happy with that.

If you can get your hands on a scan tool, hook it up and see what the computer says about your RPM's. On mine, there is about a 150 RPM difference between the gauge and the scanner with the gauge being higher. Yours might be reading on the high side also.

Are you talking about hooking it up to a laptop or is there a different kind of scanner out there? How much are they?
