Whats the first mods to go on a TPI engine?

well it looks like I am picking up my 3rd thirdgen next week, 89 iroc 350 TPI. since im new to tpi and all my question i am preparing myself for is.. what are the first mods that need to be taken care of? all i really know first hand is the coolant bypass. does exhaust need to go first? or intake? etc.. thanks for any help in advance.

You could benefit with air filters and ported/gutted airbox along with exhaust and headers. I did exhaust first on my 89 Iroc 350 because I wanted a strong muscle car sound. It helps alot especially with headers. Big difference. Before more air can go in, more needs to come out. Once you got decent exhaust and air intake mods, you can benefit from and adjustable fuel pressure regulator. Boost it up to 48-50 psi, especially if you add high flow runners and port match it all. This is good place to start.

The 350 TPI runs good. These mods + good suspension and traction will get you into the 14 flats and possible into 13's provided the engine is in good tune. My car ran 14.02 with 2800 stall on bad street tires with just headers, exhaust, K/N's, and some suspension work. I dont have a fuel pressure regulator.

well heres what i have planned so far, edellbrock shorty headers and 3" y pipe, i already have a 3" electric cutout just waiting to be installed, so thats real free flowing exhaust.

i also believe that the intake could be cleaned up quite a bit. and after that, with the adjustable regulator u mentioned, i would get the zex nitrous kit for it for the extra boost into 13's

That can be way to much for some cars. I have a set up with basically every thing you can do and that was too much for mine, Too high a FP and your idle will suck, gas mileage will blow and you will have slow reving and a sluggish car. My science proffersor's ZZ4 corvette runs best at 42 psi, I am toying between 42-46 right now. At that much FP you basically are forced to do PROM tuning.

Those basic mods, then get to prom tuning. I have a mild L98 thats in horrible tune running low 15's. Too many mods without tuning will make the car slower than stock. :\

I'am with the above post. Go with the exhaust system first. You will see good gains and everything you do on the intake side will be that much better. Allen

What do you consider too many mods without a tune?? Simply bolt ons like headers, tb, etc will better your e/t's on the stock prom. It has been done a million times.

48-50 too much? I saw an article either here on this site or some magazine that did that test and picked up most power. I dont know for sure since I dont have one but okay thanks for the input. I would like to run like 46 psi.

Level

1), 2), 3), and 6) and suspension is what I got on my 350 and should be breaking into high 13's. Ran 14.02 so exhaust really helps TPI cars, and I dont have a chip. Engines just running strong.
