MAF relays?

Hi everybody, just joined the forum. I am trying to find out where the MAF sensor relay and the burn off relay are located. I have an 87 Iroc Camaro. It's a TPI 305. I read other messages about MAF problems, my car was stalling when I started up and when it did run it wouldn't rev up. I unplugged the MAF and now it seems to run OK. I want to check the relays first but I don't know where they are. Thanks for the help.

Also, will it hurt anything to run it with the MAF disconnected.
Thanks.

Not sure of locations, but no, it won't hurt the car to run it disconnected, for testing purposes anyways. I have read on here that it is bad to disconnect/reconnect it while the car is running though.

No, I mean is it alright to drive it like that? I didn't disconnect it when it was running. I need to know where the relay's are and how do I know if it is the relay's or the MAF.
Thanks.

I think it may put the car in limp home mode to drive it disconnected. Even still, I don't think it would hurt anything... not something I would wanna do for the long run though. Im pretty sure you could find those locations pretty easily if you searched for them. Im sure trickster has given them before.

I looked back in the threads and didn't find them. The hanes manual I have doesn't tell me where they are.

Here is a picture of the three relays on the driver side firewall. They are the fuel pump relay (marked), the MAF sensor power relay, and the MAF burn-off relay. The two MAF relays are the same part number and are also used as coolant fan relays elsewhere on the car.

You might be thinking about some of the relays that are mounted on the convenience center under the dash by the drivers right knee.

same issue

I've been running my MAF unplugged for a couple of weeks now.

My car seems to have no power with the MAF plugged in. When its plugged in no wheel spin and low power.

When I unplug it I get a tremendous amount of power. From no wheel spin to out of control burnouts.

I'm guessing the MAF is bad but I'm not sure. I just don't want to plunk down a couple of hundred dollars for a new for the same performance when its plugged in.

If anyone could shed some light on this it would be great.

Regards,
G

You might be thinking about the relay board that is used with the megasquirt system or one of the other aftrmarket systems.

Replacing the MAF sensor

Hi, NYIROC, actually, I just replaced my MAF sensor because I got basically no power at the rear wheels and it ran like a charm unplugged. I guess it is alright to run it unplugged for a little while, it didn't hurt my car when I did. But for what it may save you later on down the road, I would replace the MAF sensor eventually. At Autozone they're about $163.00 with the core exchange. Three days ago I got a factory rebuilt MAF sensor from Autozone and now my Iroc Z runs better than it has in the last few months. So if you can spare the cash, I would because when you unplug the MAF sensor they call it Limp Home Mode, so that doesn't sound like a long term thing to do.

Did replacing the MAF bring you the same power as when it was unplugged?

I'm trying to figure out the best route to take.Get a rebuilt unit, new unit, or one of those grantelli units.

Regards,
G

Do not get the granitteli they are a rip off. They can cause malfunctioning reading to the computer. I had one for two weeks and got rid of it. Made my car run like sh)t

I would go with the rebuilt unit. Unless you can afford giving up the $330 for a new unit, the factory rebuilt unit is your best bet. It works like new and for the cheaper price of $160. You also get a warranty for it depending on where you go. For me, it was $163 at Autozone with the core exchange and the warranty.

I got a new one from Advanced Auto with a limited lifetime warranty for $179.00 + tax. It was made by Micro-Tec and I have had no problems with it.

Don’t live under a rock. Too damp, can’t keep the flames hot enough, and…
Yep, you can ask a question and, surprise, I can answer. If you took your head out of your *** long enough to read the QUOTE at the beginning of my post, you may have come to that conclusion on your own with just a minute amount of brain power expended. Maybe it was too obvious for you?

Funny, but it's Trickster that missed that one. Very common miss unless you've played with the '85's. Still doesn't give you the right to jump my ***. Wrong board for that boyo. At least I’m a Moron and not a moron.

I may have to PM you about your atrocious massacre of the English language and grammar, however, I doubt I’ll take the time as I have to go make my bladder gladder from all this laughing.

Just from the apparent lack of education you show I would have to agree, even though I probably am by far not the most knowledgeable on these boards. How exactly does “1985 models” put you down?!? I ANSWERED YOUR QUESTION!
*Incidentally, if you read some of the other threads, I also did it to bump the thread for someone else, but never you mind, I’m not here to help right?*
If I have a problem, I know the course that I must travel in order to resolve it, unlike you. If you had a question with regard to my response, you should have PMed me instead of trying to publicly bash me. That is usually does not end well for the basher.

NOW to recap in order to clarify this for you beyond any doubt… I thought that the QUOTE that preceded the answer would have made it crystal clear that I was trying to help someone (that would be YOU) by giving an answer (to YOUR previously posted question) that was not forthcoming in any of the posts prior in this thread. -1985 is the model year you were looking for, for the MAF junk under the passenger side panel in the dash chuckles.- How anyone could become offended from “1985 models” is absolutely hilarious.

As far as the shot about not being on here, kiddo I’ve been here a tad longer than what it says under my name. YOU I believe have been around since 2004. Not a year in and you want to tell me how I should or should not act on this board?!? Not your job boyo, that belongs to Dirk, Iroc, and the mods of their respective boards. It's a thankless job and if they need help, I'm sure the'll ask.

Thanks for the chuckle boyo, it’s been a while.

edit:fixed the html screw-up.

You know, sometimes its hard to gauge someone's personality online, but you make it easy with posts like this. Where does this come from, an unhappy childhood? Perhaps some sort of counseling would be in order for you.

The good news is though, I am sure you will at least be on probation for this little outburst, if not outright banned. Next time, use a little more tact and maturity.

The least you could have done was used semi-clean words like ******, weenie, doody head, or something like that.
