Are 12's Possible??

Hey ive got an 86' t/a with a 2000 L31 vortec with the stock 9:4:1 pistons and rods and crank. A .480 Int. .480Exh. Hyd. roller comp cam, SDPC Vortec intake manifold, BBK adj. fuel pressure regulator, proform aluminum 1.6 roller rockers, Edelbrock 1 5/8 Tubular Exhaust headers, Accel 24lbs injectors and slp high flow Runners and maybe down the road a set of .355 gears.(right now .327's) I just got the engine in and am about to hook up the lines and hoses and wiring. Alot of guys that here the setup i have are telling me this should make a good 350 hp. I really wish it could be true, but for some reason i really dont think so. Im really trying to be realistic about this and am hoping for at least 330 hp or hopefully 340. Can some of you Senior members out there give me some insight on what i should expect? Ive got a second gen. firebird guy and a 4th generation camaro guy at work talking some crap and i would like to at least have some confidence against them if i run them. Mostly the 4th gen. camaro with the LS1, thats what im really curious of going up against hes taken his to the track and came back with a 13.0

Whats your cams duration specs @.050?
Assuming the heads are not ported I don't see 350hp...ported heads with a proper cam...plus matching those runners to your base/plenum and a good tune you could see 350hp+(Crank)..
1 5/8 headers are a tad small for a good running 350...
Also vortecs are weak on the exhaust side and a cam with more lift/duration on the exaust side is good..
5sp or auto?..If auto you have a aftermarket converter?
As you sit I think an LS1 is a bit much for you right now ...but your setup has 12sec capability with a little work...Good luck

I meant whats your actuall duration specs?...I see your .480/.480 lift numbers...
A torque converter would go along way in helping your setup....

Yeah I know, i dont have the exact specs on the cam right now, I left it at work, But check this out. Theres a guy on this tech board who just had his 86' Pre-roller 350 w/vortec heads Dynod and he came up with some pretty good numbers. Hes got hooker headers a .495 Int .495 Exh. flat tappet cam, stock 1.5 rockers and a stock TPI system and hes got 243 rwhp and 315 rwtq. I thought i could do a little better because ive got a full roller motor and a slightly modified TPI. With that much rwhp the engine itself should be making around 310-315 Hp at the crank. Im pretty sure u probably saw the thread, its called Dyno'd the Iroc today.

Assuming a 20% loss of drivetrain 240rwhp would be around 295-300 crank...so you have a good 50- 60 hp to make up to get to 350 crank...probably will take a bit more than a roller setup and modded tpi to get that much...I'm not trying to be a jerk...just realistic...hope it turns out good for you.
But do you want 350 hp or 12 sec e.ts? Thanks to the TPI's torque you don't need 350hp to run 12's...just a good stall/supension and launch/traction...

Car: Only a daily driver, but comin home
Engine: I have one that runs ;)
Transmission: Caged hamster that runs really fast
Axle/Gears: They are round, I know that much
i am just going to throw my 2 cents in here and my experiences. first, i will agree with Don there, LS1 is a bit much, but at the same time is his car stock? and did he show you the time slips? but most of all, 95% of the 4th genners are a bunch of high and mighty wads, i have street raced more than one SS, Z28, and TA and beaten them, when all i had was a bored block, slightly bigger cam, and a bigger throttle body. a guy i worked with bought a 99 Z28, dumped 15 grand into the car and it only gained about a half a second from around a 13.9 to a 13.5. but to watch him drive it was funny, he would come off the gas and let it shift while at the track(thought he was cool and brought the video to work, boy i had a field day with his ego!! ) but what i am getting at is if you ran to of the exact same cars, with drivers that weighed the same, it will all depend on R/T and their driving abilities and experience. so unless this guy at work can show you some footage or the slip, i would almost quarantee you challenge him and seem confident he will most likely back down.

p.s. if it really gets ugly, i hate to say it, but there are nitrous systems you can hide, or get a vortec underhood supercharger and put some noisey timing gears and exhaust!! but again that is my and there are guys with 2x as much experience as i am old on here!!!

so u think a full roller motor with vortec heads and a bigger cam and a mild modified TPI wont make close to 350 hp?

Well the guy said all he did was put an aftermarket air box on his car, and his car is doing 13.0 at the track and maybe a chip i think. Also 91? all u did was bore a 350 block and put a little bigger cam in and u didnt do anything else? no heads, headers, ? stock L98 otherwise?

Do you know the part number on your cam? It might be 08-302-8, If so it's the same cam I have and the dur@50 is 210/220. I'm curious to see what number's you'll put down as I'll soon be putting my Vortecs and SDPC base on and I have many of the same mods as you do.

Cool web page, I just bought my SLP runners last week, they got here yesterday. I dont have the cam card w/ the specs on it, i left it at work, ( i keep forgetting to bring it home so i can tell u guys the specs)anyway Do u have roller rockers on ur setup to and if so r they 1.5 or 1.6? and have u seen the thread dynod the iroc today, hes got almost the same set up as us but no mods to the tpi and its not a roller motor at all but he has a .495 lift exh and Int. The rwhp was 243, i heard the Ls1's have 261 rwhp not bad.

no the block was from a 89 truck, 4 bolt mains, bored, hyperschit chip, slightly cammed, throttle body, accel 48,000 volt coil, 8.8 wires, acdelco plugs gapped to 65, but beyond that it was a low mileage engine, but yeah, stock heads no headers, flowmaster muffler but i doubt that helped, and i gutted my cat, cut out the air box with K&N filters, and desreened maf, but not much else, just the easy stuff. oh, but before i forget, i had a set of Hoosier tires, they are actually dirt track tires but they get real soft and that helped on take off, and i just street raced when i could and learned the shift points where the power band was the strongest, but like i said it can be experience that makes the difference!

Thanks....I need to update it badly.

Currently I still have the stock heads on so I'm running the stock 1.5 rockers. I have some 1.6 Comp Magnums with Roller Tips that I'll put on once I get the vortecs ready. Still haven't decided if I want to keep my current cam or go with something bigger.

Yeah, I assumed the .480 lift was from the rating on the cam which is usually with 1.5 rockers.

Oh, well the cam itself has the .480 lift, gross lift with the 1.6's are .510

I 've heard of a bunch of of LS1'S put 280rwhp or more down...some close to 300!!!
They are underrated at 305hp...
I don't want to put a guess on your setups potential because there are a lot of factors involved..but 350hp might be tough..
Get it running right and find out....btw when do you plan on taking it to the dyno?

Im gonna try and take it to the dyno after i get it running and tuned right. Also i dont know if u read the thread 12.99. The guy who posted it says hes gonna try and get 12.9 with the stck L98 motor and 1.6 roller rockers. Alot of people are saying its possible with the right tuning and good tires and some weight reduction. There has been alot of replies saying they know people have done it before and it is possible. Also like i said before that guy with the pre-roller motor and vortec heads and a stock tpi unit but a larger cam came up with pretty good numbers. Ok maybe i wont make exactly 350hp but i think i can come to 330 to 340 and those r pretty good at the flywheel.

Yeah 330 is a good shot...and if you get more than ...great!!
And yes I have been one of the few that belive a strong running speed density car/low options with every bolt on in the book(stock heads/cam of course) can run 12's on drag radials...with slicks no problem...but it will take a strong runner/a good setup/a good track and weather conditions...in the summer heat..no..in the cooler fall air maybe.
I don't think every L98 is capable...do to setups from factory(hard top dual cat vs. t-top high option)...and eractic GM build qaulity...
But a 1LE speed density...maybe....
