Need to buy new MAF

My MAF is throwing engine codes - cannot reset without the code getting thrown again. The car surges at idle - rising up and down. I took the screens out several months ago - probably messed it up then. The car is an 87 l98 car so the MAF is not exactly new.

The question is - what to buy? TPIS sells a bosch unit for $400 - while Oreilly's sells a reman for $165. What have you guys done? From what I can read on the posts - the granitelli is over rated.

I also plan on more mods in the future - like a cam - heads - intake package.

Thanks for any help!

Buy a Wells Maf for about $160 shipped. Best replacement Maf out there. Do a search for the address of the Bufflo NY Auto Parts store.

Why not check your relays first before blowing money on a part you may not need.

Don't buy the Grantelli its a piece of garbarge. The reman unit will work great.

DJP87Z28, thanks for the help.

I have done the search and cannot find it. If you have any info as to where these guys are that would help.

Thanks

Your TPS/IAC and idle not adjusted properly can cause this. Checking that is free, might solve your problem and save you so cash??

Take a look at the ECM/ESC ground wires on the back of the left cylinder head. My crimped ring terminal was corroded and cause me no end of problems that were much like the symptoms you report.

I crimped/soldered on a new connecter and put the ground back on and my problems were solved. But now I think all probs are gound related But, it's just too simple and easy to check not to do this and eliminate it as a potential problem. Cost me 2 weeks of down time and lots of money to find out it was a corroded connection that cost $.10 to fix.

Live and learn I guess.

Buy the remaned MAF, its most likely a Bosch unit to start with.

I just bought a remaned MAF at AutoZone, it works great. However, I'm going back to my ported MAF, so if you live in SE Michigan, I will sell it to you.

Where is the MAF relay located on 1989 Formula 350?

if you look at the back of the engine bay next to the master cylinder you will see three relays the first is your fuel pump relay, second is your maf power relay, third is your maf burn off relay. though i do agree with the reply earlier that the iac and tps may need to be adjusted if you haven't done so already. your tps for that year is still adjustable not fixed. also i was wondering what is the code or codes you are recieving from the ecm itself if it is a high or low voltage to the maf the it is usually the power relay but hopefully these will help so you will not have to chew up all that money.

Hey everyone, thanks for all of the input here. This community is invaluable if you are going to own a third gen car.

I ordered a reman maf and it should be here today. My friend ordered it through his shop. I will just put it on and if everything works again I know what the problem is. If things are still the same I can take it back and look into all of the suggestions that have been posted here.
