loosing horse power. (can't have that )

hey guys.....
i had bought a road dyno and have made about a dozen runs in the couple of months that iv'e had it. still not sure accurate it is yet... but on the graph it has always showed a drop in hp between 3,500 and 4,500 .. so from 255 hp down to like 41 hp then a gradule increase back to 200 hp.. the manual says it could be spark knock and retarding the timing could it really hinder the performance that much..?? kinda stumped..any ideas.. please help ....

get your hands on a scantool, and have a friend look at the knock values as you drive at WOT. if you have a high value, you can loosen the sensor to make it less sensitive. do you run the car at the track? if so how much? maybe you need a valve spring checkup.

alot of times, when the car is hammered on at the track every weekend,( which is hard not to do), when the mph falls off, and the engine looses noticable power, it can be that weak valve springs are causing the problem. i dont think this the case with you problem though....tom

also i noticed that you have 305 heads. do you know what your compression ratio is? the knock sensor can still pull timing out even though you cant hear it. they somtimes have the ability to retard timing ,when the exhaust is, maybe touching a part of the vehicle or suspension. this is rare, because of the frequency the sensor is supposed to distinguish knock from other noises, but i have seen this happen. a noisey valve train can also over excite the knock sensor. on an 86 maf car, i believe you can disconnect the sensor without setting a code. try this and see if the power comes back...tom
