TPI vs TBI

what are the advantages/disadvantages between the two?

I am getting a 92 RS with the 305 TBI, and I have a 305 TPI, should I just stick with the TBI or swap in my TPI?

What kind of performace gains would there be, if any?

Thanks, Kyle

TBI was one step above carburetion. Fuel is still getting dumped down a wet intake -- hopefully the distribution of fuel/air ends up being the same at each cylinder, after going through unequal length runners. Usually the TBIs had the awful swirl port heads, which suffered above 4000 rpms, from what I've read on this board. The TPI 305 will have better heads. There's a reason why multiport fuel injection was used on passenger cars late into the 90s, and the TBI wasn't -- multiport guarantees that, assuming the injectors are matched, each cylinder gets the exact same duration and volume of fuel.

I'm not a mechanic and I've never done a swap in my life, but from what I hear, it wouldn't be worth putting another 305 in there. It sounds like you'd be better off leaving it as is or looking for a 350.

TPI is a whole lot better than TBI. I got 9 tenths out of my TBI-TPI swap, but then my truck wasn't running right with the TBI, so that was not a typical improvement, but still, it IS better. And there is more power potential on the TPI because you have unlimited injector options and intake options. With the TBI you are stuck with at mose about 750 cfm and 90 lb injectors.

EDIT: Also the TPI swap is very easy... i did it in 1 weeks nd 2 weekends with NO mechanical experience whatsoever and its 6 weeks into it now with no problems at all.

Stock there is about 50hp difference between the two..(if your TPI car is 5spd with a good cam)

Also with the TPI you can achieve awesome gas mileage ones you get into the chip burning.
