305 needing some gear help
hey I have an 89 ta 305 lb9, wondering what kind of gears to get, been told 4.11 or 3.73. I have the 305 ws6 package with headers, custom ram air intake 52mm tb, ported plenum, siamesed runners, mildly ported base, chip, airfoil, 3 inch catback with an exhaust dump before the high flow cat and borla muffler, accel coil and wires and 24lb injectors (no bashing they were really cheap and brand new) thanks all and yes I did a search not many people have the exact same setup as me also Im planning on doing a vigilante converter with a shift kit and yes it's an automatic.
Jason
PS I hear some 305s are checkin out 13's what do you think mine would run with the current setup + gears and a tq conv.? thanks

Get some 3.42s or 3.73s, a 2800 stall torque converter, and a cam and you will see mid-high 13s if driven well.
I'm aiming for very low 13s with my new setup when I get it together. Stock bottom ended 305 with ported LT1 heads, LT1 intake, too big of a cam, headers, full exhaust, K&N CAI, 24# injectors (good choice by the way), a 3200-stalled torque converter, and some gears between 3.23 and 3.73 (though I'm leaning towards the higher ratios because of the powerband).

exactly, I really dont want to go into the internals, Id like a solid 13 with a "stock" 305, just to make the 350s squirm a bit. Later on in college Ill probably get the engine rebuilt still the 305 but probably bored, add a nitrous kit and instant sleeper. But for now Im putting bolt ons. Ive been told that the higher ratio would make the car scream but kill my gas milage. thanks yall.

Where ya plannin on goin to school? I'm gonna be going to Milwaukee School of Engineering next year. Our ideas are the same, but I'm definitely not going to spend money rebuilding my 305. If it gets to the point of needing a rebuild, I'm dropping a 350 in. But until then, its bolt ons galore for the 305.

stick with your stock 3.23s for a TPI car. they arent hurting you, and it keeps your engine in its power band longer, TPI 305s arent really known for their high rpm breathing, so stick with the stock gear and spend the money on a cam or some roller rockers. you will realize more gain from a cam and/or rockers than you will a gear swap and you will still retain virtually all of your current fuel mileage.
you can see my sig, i am gunnin for mid 13s once i actually get a decent exhaust and start burnin chips, if the car had slicks i think it could run about a 13.7 now. just some thoughts.

planning on going to the Naval or Air Force Academy, and in reply to keeping the stock gears, my car came with a 2.73 posi rear end, not 3.23, I thought about upgrading to 3.23 too but was just told 4.11 by my friends for a big gain and again I DONT want to go into the engine, all bolt ons to the car for now.
