Well one of my friends bought a GTA. And he was told it was a 350 tpi. The other day he went to buy a water pump and the guy at pepboys told him it was a 305. Can you tell what size it is by the water pump. And is there another way to tell what size it is?

The water pump is the same. The guy at Pep Boys probably got fired from Burger King last week so don't listen to him. The casting number is on the back of the block, behind the driver's side cylinder head. It's probably covered in grease as well. Get it and go to www.mortec.com to see which size block is in the car. That's the only way to get a for-sure accurate answer, other than pulling the head and measuring the bore.

 

And while working at Burger King he wondered why nobody ordered big macs......

Anyway,
As far as the car , the 8th digit of the vin will be an 8 for a 350 car or an F for a 305 car.
The only way to tell the motor itself would be check the casting number as previously suggested. Or another way is to check the suffix code that is stamped on the block. It is located on the passenger side above the water pump, below the head. The code will have a letter, four numbers, and three letters. The last three letters is the suffix code. Post them or the block (or both) and I can check my code books.

 

If this is a supposedly "original numbers matching motor", the obvious things to check are;

1) The 8th digit of the VIN (as mentioned)
2) The "SPID" sticker on the back of the lid of either the center console (most MAF cars) or back of the locking box in the rear of the car.
3) The Emissions Sticker on the hood (if not removed)
3) The casting number of the heads (350s and 305s have different heads)
4) The eprom label.
5) The fuel injectors (350s have 22# while 305s have 19#).

The heads and block are suppose to have the same last 6 digits of the sequence numbers on them too (though I don't recall where).

And, this is only to confirm an original engine. If anything has been swapped, you need to check the block casting as mentioned above.

If the person selling the car claims this is an original 350 with a 5-speed....RUN. (No such car was every made...only manual GTA with 350 was the Firehawk - 1992 I beleive).
