Help!
Bought my son an 88 iroc with 350 and it has been nothing but a pain in the ***. We removed motor and had it rebuilt by local machine shop.
After motor was put back in, motor would suge like it had a vaccuum leak. I have a tech 1a here and it kept giving me a code 43, which acording to the haynes book was a bad ecm/ecs modlule.
We replaced the ecs, oil pressure sening unit, and still get the code. It never displayed code 36 which is bad MAF. I picked up a rebuilt MAF from oreilleys and it made zero difference, car still ocassionally surged. Yes I cleaned out the MAF and still made no difference.
last week he tried to go to work and car after he left would flat out die .
When I went to work on it, it would do the same, flat out die if you let foot off of gas. On a hunch, I unplugged the MAF and to my surprise, after a few start ups, car began to purr like a kitten!
I am confused, I thought car had to have this thing to run at all??????
Not only that, it took a day or so for it to finally show code 36 (bad MAF) which further confuses me.
Could i have a bad computer???? It is a refurbed unit also.
To make things even more confusing, the car had a bad fuel pump, so we replaced it. Bought one from napa (carter unit) and put it in. While installing it, the highly recomended new wiring harness that napa suckered me into buying, was actually far les quality of connection and gauge of wire, connection, etc so we just hooked up old harness which was exact plug and play.
I keep getting a code 54 which translates to defective fuel pump which I know is a new unit.
Could a bad ecm computer be causing these problems??
Where can one get a good maf besides an auto parts store that has rebuilts that obviously do not work all the time?
any help would be great.
thanks
