tpi swap help

ok ive searched for days an i cant find a damn thing for what i need. i got a 85 305 tpi for my car and i wanna swap it in. my question is what do i need to do to make my 89 VATS equipped car run with the 85 ECM. is it just plug and play or do i have to disable the VATS. also could i use a VATS computer in place of the 85 computer? thanx for the help.

err huh?

From what I gathered from that, you want to use a 85 computer in a 89 car.... Why? lol Anyways VATS doesn't matter since the 85's never came with it.

i kno 85 didnt have VATS. my question is is there anything special i have to do to get it to run the 85 computer in my 89 car. anlso if anyone knows can i swap out my 85 computer for a 86-89 one or am i stuck with the 85.

Isn't your car TPI already? or do ya have one of the few TBI ones? Sorry I don't know much about your particular car.

Anways you'd have to do some wiring to get the 85 computer to work in the 89 car. Honestly I'd do what razor said and get a 165 ecm and just use that.

i got stuck with one of the L03 cars so i wanna swap it out. i got a 85 motor but i just wanna make sure VATS wont cause me any issuses seein as 85 computers dont have the prom for VATS.

Ahh ok. Nope wont matter if you have VATS or not. The 85 puter wont even look for a signal coming from the VATS module. So you're good to go..

Actualy now that I know your car is TBI and since you are going TPI.. Just convert your TBI harness into a SD TPI harness. Took me a few hours to do one for a friend. I posted somewhere in here the pin outs for the 746 to a 730 ECM.

Why I say that is because you'll have to re do the wiring for the serp setup since the 85's were a V belt setup, unless you are going to use that crap too. Also too the 85 puter's used a "piggy back" relay pack for the MAF and IIRC there are a few other differances too that you'll have to take in account to get the 85 harness and sh<x>it to work.

Do a search on the 85 TPI ECM. They are far different than the 86-89 systems. The largest and most expensive difference is the MAF module and the MAF itself. Maybe you want to go speed density??? Either way you will be repinning your existing harness unless you swap the 85 harness into the car and use the 85 MAF and ECM. Try to do as much reading as possible off the boards before you chose a direction. There have been lots of documented swaps on TGO. IIRC the front page has some repinning info as well in the tech articles.

how hard is it to swap to SD. i was thinkin about doin that. all id have to do would b to add 6 more injector wires cause tbi is SD already right. and could you guys post some good links for repinning cause i cant find a damn thing.

Add 8 injetor connectors, legthen the TPS and IAC wires, get three more connectors for the ECM repin and make sure the prom is right. Start car.

so let me get this its that easy. i dont have to remove or change anything major on the tpi. i just have to remove the MAF seein as i wont need it any more. the motor came with a 85 harness and computer and a 91 vette SD harness so i guess i could chop one up for wires. the guy i got it from said he was gonna switch it to SD. what do i do with the ninth injector the 85s have tho. do i block it off

Purdy much so.

Personally I'd go to the junk yard and get what you need off some FWD V6 cars and sell the harnesses that you have already on ebay.

I used the CSI as the block off. Haven't had any problems yet. Dont worry about hooking it up either since there is no need to do so.
