Gears High Flow LTR

Hey guys,

Well in my quest to put the L98 engine in my 92 RS this winter it has been a long and suprisingly expensive road... haha

What was just supposed to be a complete stock L98 drop is now turning into a decent aftermarket setup but I have a question...

I'm scrounging around ebay for gears/posi ect because I have the crappy 2.73 one wheel peel and need some advice what to pick up. If I had a STOCK TPI I would have gone and was going to go with 3.42 hands down. But here's where I'm at:

L98 Longblock (Reringed)
zz4 Cam
LT4 Springs/ret/locks
SLP Runners (Gasket Matched)
Accel Base (Gasket Matched)
Siamesed and Ported Plenum
2800 Edge 9.5" TQ
Stock 700 Tranny (this will go fast... )

Should I be looking for 3.73 gears now? Or should I still try to stick w/ the 3.42.

How much do you drive the car?

I just put a 3.27 9bolt in, and with the 2200ish stall, I wouldn't want to go much deeper. I still stay outta OD around town, but she's cruising around 23-2500rpms. Some would say that's nothing, but I wouldn't want it reving toooo much more for "cruising" rpms.

The bigger question is what tranny will you get when the 700 goes? If you swap to a manual, then maybe I'd go with the 3.73s.

Stick with 3.42 and just get you some nice suspension mods for traction.

Go with higher gears if manual, 3:42's should be good for an auto

Thanks guys for the help.

AB, you have opened a whole nother ballgame. I've pretty much exhausted my funds and I haven't even purchased the Edge converter yet or springs yet. Everything else is sitting in the garage ready to go in. Thinking about going with 986 springs since I've decided to have the machine shop work them over, anyhow...

I'd love to save about 400 bucks on the converter. How does that 2200 Stall do for you? Is that a S10 converter because I have researched this as a cheap alternative for more stall?

As far as the tranny, blah - I hope it holds up at least this year and would prefer if I can get two more years out of it. If it goes out might be sitting for awhile. This thing is just a weekend warrior anyhow but still. If and when it goes out I'm undecided on a Probuilt 700 or a T56. Both will cost about the same. I know the AUTO is more consistant in the 1/4, but I also love to drive and I think the Manual would be more fun. I don't know haven't decided yet.

Looks like I'll stay away from the 3.73s for now. I thought the higher flow pieces and bigger cam might throw you into their range, but guess not - I'm a noob. LOL

How many miles does that tranny have? Mine had about 160,000 and it didn't last through the first 100 miles after the cam and exhaust.

The 2200 is certainly a big help...almost a necessity, but If I had my choice, I'd go with a 2800. ...but that's gonna cost more, and my 2200 came with the tranny I bought from a friend.

The S10 TC IMHO is not worth it, even for a daily driver. I think it's only around 1800 stall. Like I said, my 2200 is just enough, barely. I didn't have the money to do more at the time, and I HAD to do something to get 'er running.

Gears will help though. I'd say you could get by without a TC for now, but I'd be saving for one. My stocker was shot, I had no choice.

Tranny's got 100k on it give or take a few k. I guess I'll just try to get an Edge. I like the price difference over the vigilante and from what I see they are very competitive.

I'm gonna hold off buying the gears and see how she pulls before I make my final decision. I'll let y'all know and post results. Thanks

IRP opens March 29

(Although I really /doubt/ my car will be done and hit the streets until April/May - still have to repin the Harness, blah...)
