I'm geussing maybe the timing is off by just a little. Sound right? Well I still have to go back through and check to see if i forgot to hook something up but it is dark now. I still think it's the timing though. I marked where the rotor and distributor where when i tore it apart and realigned it when i put it back together. Maybe it's off just a little. Which way do i turn it?

either you timing is off like to stated, or theri may be a vaccum leak somehwere and false air is entering the engine. turning the dist. CCW will advance the timing. If you can prove that there is no leaks and stil cant get the thing right and believe its the timing, then you will have to start over with the dist. You will need to get the engine at TDC(top dead center) and install dist.

why do i need to get it to TDC and reinstall? Why can't i just try to advance the timing a little bit and see what happens from there?

The distributor might be off a tooth. If you can see that the mark is close enough to tdc, then you should be fine. Just adjust it to 6 degrees. If you can't get it there without turning the distributor a lot, you are going to have to start from scratch by realigning the distributor.

i once did the same thing and the problem was a massive vacum leak from the front and back of manifold it was spitting out check to see if those two areas are sealed well there the tricky ones when it comes to sealing small blocks

you can get a vacume gauge from your local parts (auto zone) place for cheap. it's a sure way to know if you have a vacume leak.
