selecting a TPI prom

my tpi has never really run good especially idle ... can one of you recommend a good chip for my car this is basically whats on the car.

needs full emmisions
vats delete

motor is a stock 82 LG-4
edelbrock headers
5 speed
373 gears
speed density TPI
195 thermostat

is it true a good prom burner can get a chip right knowing just this or is more involved in it all, I've seen the ebay prom chips but if it's cheap its to good to be true.

so tell me whats best for my setup

What computer are you using, what chip is in it now? Best thing to do is find a stock chip close to your setup and start there. Then you need to log some data to see what the engine is actually doing, and figure out what needs to be changed.
Or you can just start changing chips until the right one gets plugged in.

I think the ecm is a 727 or 730, it a 90-92 f-body speed density ecm

You really need data from the car to get it right.

Where in socal are you? You should ask on the socal board, we have a local tuner.

If it was from an Fbody, then you have the 730. The 727 mounts under the hood and has sqaure shaped harness connectors.

How are you running the car with vats still enabled?

Are you certain you have the correct broadcast code for your application? I've seen alot of people just stick a 350 or 3.1 memcal on a 305 and wonder why it doesn't run right. Alot of the 730 ecms you buy on Ebay and classifieds didn't come from V8 cars, but from 3.1s, and often still have the 3.1 prom inside.

You can get a "rough" tune just by telling someone your application and engine specs. People don't like to hear that, but alot of them don't realize that the factory had a very rough tune to begin with. No one can "tune" your car over the phone, internet, or mail. Whoever tells you that is BSing you. Your best bet is to do as madmax suggested and find someone locally, to drive the car with you and a laptop hooked up.

As far as the cheap Ebay chips, you have to read and compare to see why its at that price. For example, I have some programming auctions for $20. The reason for that is because 95% of my customers do stock retrofits onto older cars, and already have a memcal. All they really need is to disable vats, emissions, and sometimes a couple of odds and ends. Its not much work involved, and I don't do any tuning. There is no reason for someone who just needs a couple of bits switched to pay over $100 for something they don't need.

the ecm came from TPI specialties in I believe texas, the chip/memcal was order for a automatic, VATS delete, and full emmisions .... I am 100% certain this running problem isn't engine related since this LG-4 ran perfect when it had the stock carb on it, it's not fuel related, I put new injectors and a new fuel pump recently, I'm going to try a tune up, but I'm fairly certain this has to be ecm related. I do get a code 24 but I also havent found a correct speed sensor for it. I am about ready to just drop a throttle body injected motor in the car.

do any of you know anyone in southern california that can do this data logging and actually burn me what will get this car running right.

And can someone tell me what the timing should be on a 90-92 speed density as well as idle for a 5 speed and spark plug gap

I am about ready to just drop a throttle body injected motor in the car.
That will be more work than figuring out whats wrong now, and fixing it.

By doesn't run well, could you elaborate a little more?
Whats your timing set at?
What do your plugs look like?
Verify that your cap and rotor is in good shape, and you don't have any burnt or cut plug wires.
Whats your fuel pressure?
Have you set your TPS properly?
Have you verified that all your sensors are working properly?

I would strongly urge you to borrow a laptop from a buddy, download Tuner Pro RT, and either buy or build an ALDL cable. You will be able to see exactly whats going on with all the sensors, and that will help figure out whats the problem.

6 degrees BTDC

Don't know what the factory idle speed is, but probably around 650-700 rpm.

Follow this to adjust your TPS, and minimum air.
