Will this camshaft work on a stock 305???
Cam Motion Custom Grind
223/232, 509/530, 114.4
I was planning on installing it with my AFR heads and the specs were done considering a ProCharger F1. However because of a very painful divorce, I had the cancel the order on the heads and I was never able to buy the F1 head unit which I had found barely used.
Since I have the cam just sitting here I'd like to install into my LB9 with the stock heads in place. I know I will atleast need new springs. I tune my own chips and I have a WB o2 sensor for doing it, I also already have 30lb injectors installed, blah blah blah, the list goes on.
Anyway, will a cam of these specs even work with the stock heads or is the lift too high? What springs would you guys suggest and is there anything else I would need to replace? I'm trying to do this on a very low budget.
Thanks!
Alex

I really think that the cam is a little large for a stock 305. I am going to be running a cam close to that in my 383. I am not saying that my cam is large for a 383 by any means but it would be a stout cam for a 350.
So the cam will work.
I know my heads won't flow what the cam needs but I should still gain power within what the heads can flow right? I don't think I'd loose any power doing this, I'd expect I would gain a decent amount even with stock castings....

I don't think you can stack the springs high enough to fit without machining the heads. The retainers most likely would hit the valve seals.

look into the comp cams xr 26x (x being the variable, can't remember what the roller version of the xe 268 is) or the lt1 cam. you'd be pretty happy with those. try to find another set of 081 heads and get some porting/polishing done and put a larger 1.94 intake valve on them and be done. you'll be in the 13's for sure.
the cam you have listed has WAY too much duration for your tpi setup and the heads will not flow the air the cam wants. the car will be a bit faster, and will probably sound pretty neat, but it would be much faster with a smaller cam, and you'd be overall, way more pleased. you have to build the motor around your heads, not your cam.

what do you base your knowledge on? seriously, how do you think that cam would work?
Well I still plan on buying the AFR heads and the ProCharger, it's just going to be another year. So I don't wanna buy another cam. I just smogged 2 months ago so I'm good for another 2 years. I just figured since it was here that one weekend when I get bored I'd throw it in and do some tuning. I've got a heavily built TPI setup but as mentioned, the stock heads are the bottleneck.
So the general opinion is that the cam is of course too big for the stock heads but will work. I'll gain a little power but I'd of course gain more with a cam matched to my heads. I would definantly need a new set of springs to install it but can anyone suggest what set to go with that will work with the stock heads and rockers?
Thanks!

Springs are kind of chosen after the cam . If you are blowing this V-8 ....keep a wide LSA angle on the cam ...whatever you get . Chargers don't like overlap
If you are keeping the TPI ....you don't want alot of duration ...you want fast ramp rates. Actually the stock L98 cam ...with 117 LSA ( in 89 I think ) is a great S/C camshaft ...because of the wide LSA it has.

Oh, the One Stop on Ashe/White. 5 min from my place...
I have gone there in the past. They didn't do TO back then. Good to know, since they are good people. My fear is that I will end up at a place where the techs see legit mods and freak out. All my cars are TO now so I might as well get used to going to one place. heh
Man, I forgot about your board. Checked it out yesterday though. Sorry to hear about the home life. I hope all works out well for you Alex.

It's not one stop smog on the corner, it's a little place behind it on schirra ct or however its spelled. I live on White ln and Buena vista, I guess your not too far from me either.

Oh, okay.
When I first bought my other car I went to that one. We had taken our cars to One Stop when they went back to non TO for a while.
I checked your homepage and meetings seem light right now. We should pick a spot for a meet so that I can impress you with my multicolored Formula. Mine is, umm, a project...
Later Alex, thanks for the info.

While I am no expert I think you may have a rough idle with such high lift and duration. A 114 LSA may compensate for the lift and duration. Definitely run this proposal past your mechanic for his advise.
