TPI and cams
How does a TPI restrict cam selection? I have been told that on a TPI motor, that a person can go with about as big a cam as you want as long as it's a MAF (1987 and earlier) motor on a stock computer. Is this true and if not, what other mods are needed with a fairly large cam to make the motor run properly?

tpi does limit selection
i put a mild cam in and it worked just fine its a crane compucam, meaning it will work with the stock computer. also due to long runners and rather small plenum on a stock tpi motor a big cam will keep the intake valves open to long and the motor will be starved for air and stumble and even stall at low rpm. just check with cams manufacture before buying or call a tech line a summit or jegs those guys are helpful. also with any cam use a adjustable fuel pressure regulator the way the motor is not starved for gas at high rpm's (due to the increase lift from any performance cam)
any other ?'s just ask

MAF's were used up to 1989 ....I got one
. After all the research I have done .....these are the constants that I see when people pick out a cam for LTR TPI setup. 1. they have a a wide LSA
2. they will have less duration than typically wanted for a hi-po setup
3. They got big lift
4. As a result of the other two ....a fast ramp rate . But if you are doing any of this .....you need the heads worked aswell .
If you plan on going big ..... it's MANDITORY you need to learn how to burn a chip . Also off the shelf chips will be useless to you ..... as it's hard to make a tune for a car that isn't there. I myself am running the ZZ4 camshaft in mine ....it started up right away and idled steady at 700 rpm . This was with a 305 5 speed prom ...inside a 350 car ( I don't recomend you do this ....it's just what I did for now ) . Also I recomend the search function maybe soemthing like CAMS .... or something to that effect.
Hope it helps

I put headers, high flow cat, Dynomax exhaust. K&N filters and an airfoil in the intake on my 88, 23# injectors. Now the engine is slightly lean when cold and has some hesitation from idle, runs fine above idle. Can't imagine putting in a bigger cam without some serious computer recalibration.
