Hi Flow Runners--which one???

Here's a little different spin for you guys at Third Gen. Have got a 1989 Chev 4x4 with a Vortec based engine and Edelbrock TBI to MPI conversion that will rev to 6000rpm with the right cam (TB ported to 640cfm). Have always liked the look of TPI and after rejecting the HSR, recently have started collecting parts for the TPI conversion. the lower manifold will be SDPC vortec piece but the runner selection is driving me crazy. I want the motor to spin to 5500, I will port match the runners but really don't want to do major surgery. What I found is(hypped hp): AS&M $415 +25hp, Accel $466 +15hp, Edel $330 +19hp, TPIS $475 +10hp, SLP $230 +20hp. Obviously the SLP runners are favorites on price point, Edelbrock usaully puts out a solid product, so WTF???

AS&M or SLP and hog them out... IF you have a base that'll do it. IIRC the SDPC casting was essentially a stocker wasn't it? Not sure on that one. I always tout the Big mouth/AS&M combo for an LTR set-up. If the SDPC casting is stockish, call them and ask if it will take an extrude hone out to something to match the hogged SLPs or the AS&Ms.

well i haven't bought it yet-SDPC toutes it as a hi flow, also looking at Edelbrock(who as i understand makes both) 3817 hi flow base. Right at this point am favoring the Edelbrock package that is rated from idle to 5500, my experiance is with a good cam you can go a little higher rpm wise and still be producing power. Heard a lot of good things about the AS&M runners. Not in the hunt for max rpm like you guys- I've got a 6000lb *** to haul.

don't think torque is an issue with the tpi, 700r, 4.10- want to maximize the vortec heads and help eliminate the tpi bottleneck. i agree about the 6000rpm just wanted to show that it went there with power with a previous cam that ended up not liking the speed density even after programing. Again due to my limited porting experiance don't want to risk really doing alot of work to these.

how easy is it to dent the stock runners, seem to alot out there that are hashed, would the AS&M be as bad. Are the SLPs favorites because of 1/ performance, 2/ price, 3/ or just lots of meat on them for you guys to grind away for hours?

you kind of answered your own question.
it can't be for performance due to the fact that you have to grind away on them for hours to get the performance you wan't. so it must be the price.

as&m'a are bad to the bone out of the box. not that i'm biased
but i do sport the as&m's

If you're interested, I'm selling my entire TPI intake setup. Monster grunt below 3500rpm and it does run out of gas about 5500rpm also. SLP runners and a highly ported plenum up top. ....The SLP runners are pretty well ported as is and I'm running a modified cam and head setup.Stock throttle body with airfoil is extra if desired. Everything else is there. Fuel rails and AFPR, no injectors but I do have the stock 19# injectors if interested, thermostat housing w/ 160stat, etc... If interested I can send you out some pictures and we can talk pricing.. I also have some other odds and ends, hypertech thermomaster chip, stock 165 chip with the ecm....

Let me know,
Chris
