I think you are referring to the EGR temp switch. Senses if hot gas is moving past it indicating EGR is functioning, which is "watched' by the ECM.
Mine isn't a needle though, just a squared off end.

As I recall, there is a blunt ended temperature switch that screws into this location, and it didn't look like any needle to me:
