HELP with buying my first car ('89 5.7 iroc)

well i wasnt sure where to post this so i put it in here.

anyway, ive been working for a while and i think i finally have enough for both my dream car and my first car, i found this white '89 iroc w/ t-tops and a 350.

please noone say **** like "you shouldnt start out with such a high performance machine shuch as this" or any of that bullcrap. i aware of the insurance and its rwd-ness also.

i saw it on ebay and it didnt sell beacuse the reserve wasnt met at $3050. i called the dude up and im gonna look at it this weekend. here is the description he gave....

"Vehicle Description

I am the third owner of this awesome 5.7 litre tpi 89 iroc z in excellent condition no mechanical problems what so ever the car has a new jasper engine with about 50000 miles on it and the transmission was rebuilt about 15000 miles ago the trans has a 2200 stall with a transgo shift kit and servo, edelbrock tes header system which is emissions legal and a magna flow 3 inch cat back exhaust. the car also has jones racing products alluminum underdrive pullys, k&n filters, ported plentium, bbk adjustible fuel pressure regulator, 160 t stat, new starter, new 140 amp alternator, new battery, new radiator /hoses and water pump, perma cool trans cooler, ac delco rapid fire plugs, accel 8 mm wires, and accel cap and rotor, new ignition module, new coil, new t-top weather stripping, car has always been garaged and never seen snow. car may have been caught in rain once in a while. the car was never smoked in by me or the previous owners. this iroc was never abused or raced. I also have all reciepts and documents for everything that was ever done to the car. the only two things wrong with the car is there is a small dent in the driver side quarter pannel and a small dent in the driver side door was like that when i purchased."

i just want to know the things i should be looking out for, even thoug this thing sounds really straight, he bought it from an old lady and said she has all the reciepts and she never beat it at all, he claimed hes owned a few irocs and this one doesnt creak and sqeak when you turn at all, said its really smooth.

so anyway what should i look out for? can you guys give me some pointers?

- new t-tops weatherstripping, so that should be aight
- he said it has high oil pressure, also the o-rings are fine cuase i heard jasper motors have bad ones?
- i allready checked the vin, it all checks out fine.
- what else?

OH YEA, IT HAS DARK GRAY LEATHER TOO IN PRETTY GOOD CONDITION!

thanks

Well, I'm not saying it's a bad deal, but ya gotta question if he bought it from an old lady. Yeah, RIGHT!

Check for cracks right behing the trailing edge of the T-tops.

Also check the body seams to see how straight the car looks. Typically you can find any quick repair stuff that wasn't done right, like someone was just try to sell it, ya know?

check tires, if ya need new ones, negotiate that into your offer.

Look for rust.

Look for tears around the lumbars on the seats.

If it were me, I'd at least like to see receipts for the motor.

MAKE SURE IT WILL PASS INSPECTION. Don't just take his word for it.

Drive it.

thanks for the info.

yea i highly doubt it was from on old lady, i cant see one buying a 350 and ****. he said the tires are all new, but ill check them out. he said there is some "wear and tear" on the drivers bucket, but its not too bad he said. he says hell have all the reciepts for me when i get htere.

i think he siad its inspected as of now, plus its in the same state so im goo don that.

so im gonna check for the condition of the edges around the t-tops and for any rust. he also claims that the undercarriage of the car is extremely clean, and is in the best conidition hes ever had w/ an iroc, whatever that means.

thanks, and im def gonna drive it.

any other things? i mean like how can i check out the electrical system, i heard they can be a mess in some tpi cars...

If everything works, and it doesn't look like a rats nest under the hood, you're probably OK. You can't check EVERYTHING, ya know? I've heard horror stories of people hacking up electrical harnesses, but like I said, there's only so much you can do. I'd make sure everything works, and at least everything "appears" to be in good shape.

Bottom line is if he really wants to hide something, there's not too much you can do. Just take your time, look everywhere, drive it, look over it again. Don't get overexcited and buy before you're ready.

I was just wondering one thing......

Why the hell does it have a jasper engine and a rebuilt tranny if it wasnt beat on? if maintained well, a chevy small block will last a looooooong time.

good ***! for $3000 dollars what do you expect? I say jump on it. You can usually tell if theres anything really wrong with it. Look under the motor and check for leaks and around the trans too. Check for leaks around the rearend housing. For 3 grand your starting out with a great project car to do what you want with it.

Go for it-

If the body is straight (no rust, no billy-bob repairs), the interior is nice (no/few tears, stains, etc), and the electrical system is okay (no bird's nests in the harness or wire-nut repair jobs!) then you will be okay.

Sometimes people who care more about the car than have the ability to afford correct repairs go with Jasper. Same with the tranny. Being short on cash but long on attention to detail may explain why the car is in such good shape. Someone knew rebuilt meant bad and new was better.

My $.02- I don't think most women know that a Jasper motor is a waste. My mom had two Camaros. They were immaculate because she kept them that way. If I weren't the gearhead of the family- she may have done something like putting a Jasper engine or tranny in them. So, the story kinda checks out in my opinion. Most women HATE dealerships and would rather go somewhere else then deal with a dealer's repair shop.
