L98 350 TPI Ignition upgrade problem

Hello,
I am repairing my 91 GTA L98 350. I want to replace the stock ECM with a FAST XFI, Acell DFI or AEM ECU. FAST XFI system seems to be the easiest. Anyway, I intend to create a coil per cylinder, distributorless crank triggered ignition system.
I need to eliminate the stock distributor as my new custom manifolds and plenum will not allow it.
Correct me if I am wrong PLEASE.
I believe the HEI distributor preforms three functions other than spark distribition:
1. Provides the Tachometer signal ???
2. Drives the oil pump ???
3. Hole in distributor shaft lubricates the rear of the camshaft ???

Problem: If I eliminate the stock HEI Distributor;
1. How do I generate a signal to run the Tachometer ?
2. How do I lubricate the engine properly at any RPM ?
3. Not sure how necessary this is since no distributor gear to lubricate.

Please reply directly to

Need some helpful advice.

You could probably run a tach off the crank trigger, if you're designing from scratch you'll have to work it into the system.

You could lop the top of the dizzy off and make a billet type cover to hide it sonme, or cut it flush with the intake and do some machine work to retain a bushing or bearing.

The bottom of the dizzy (above the gear) is what distributes oil and is needed. I'd be willing to bet that if you look through Jegs or Summit, or call'em up and ask, they must have something that drops in to take the place of the distributor...they do sell crank trigger kits for mag systems, etc, so they may have individual parts for DIY'ers.

L98 ignition mods

Thanks for the advice. But I was hoping to find someone who had actually preformed the mod of removing the HEI distributor.
I was hoping to elininate the Distrb. parastic power loss too.

The crank rotates too fast for a tach signal. The tack signal rotates at one half the speed of the crank.
DIzzy ??? I prefer
Dist. or.
Distrb.

Thanks any one else got any ideas?

Good luck in yor quest, parisitc loss from spinning the dizzy would only account for about .0001 HP

All loss is to drive the oil pump. You'll have to look at a different system to oil the engine.

But I haven't done it, so I won't waste time offering suggestions.

What do the Lt1s use to drive the oil pump?

Maybe you could use one of those?
