Intake Y Piece...Restrictive?
I was just brainstorming for some intake ideas, and I really like how the stock piece comes out of the TB, then y's off into those 2 squares...but to me, that looks really restrictive...how that thing just flattens out and has that little curve in it...I'm just wondering if I should make a 3.5" custom cold air intake that goes down and around in front of the raditor, but thats a lot of work...my motor is, i'm guessing, just under 400 horse, and it has a HSR on it with twin 58mm TB.....am i just worrying about something that I shouldn't be worrying about, or is this y pipe pretty restrictive...could I maybe port it out or something to increase air flow...because like i said, i love the looks of it when you pop the hood, it just looks mean for some reason...

You would be better off with a custom cold air intake fo 3.50 inches or more. There is somewhat of a restriction where the round part of the intake meets the "Y" to the air boxes.
By the way K&N recommends around 95 square inches of filter for a 350 at 5500 rpm. The total of the two Camaro filters is 72 square inches. The one on the Pontiac comes to around 92 square inches. However the Pontiac intake track is way worse than the one on the Camaro.

okay...i figured it was pretty restrictive.....how do I go about building a custom cold air intake then? can i just go to an exhaust shop and have them bend the pipe, or do I buy like mandrel bent J bends and cut out the angles I need or what...also which size should I go? 3 1/2" or 4"?? I have MAF, and I think the casing is 3 1/2" on that...

Do a search or buy an SLP CAI single or (dual if available)...
I already made a research on that topic and I ended reading that the OE element is restrictive to a Max. of approx. 300HP/Flywheel!!!
With your new setup, I don't need to tell U that you need more air coming in. You may have to adjust the afpr after adding more air coming in (as I did for mine).

3 1/2 inch is plenty. Do a search of cold air intakes as there are plenty on this board and how they were done.

I've heard the SLP single was nothin better than stock, and the dual is hard to get your hands on...but I did a search, found a lot of pics of people showing theres off, but not really any tutorials on how to make one, such as pipe bending and I couldnt' really even find where people got those rubber things you find on the connections...

I bet he would see an increase if he switched to a custom CAI...its a proven fact that there is simply not enough filter area to be non restrictive over 300 hp...

i've done some thinking...and if i'm gonna do a custom cold air intake, its gonna look real nice, so i'm not gonna rush it and get it down real fast.....so i need something temperary to get by...i took a cutoff wheel to the air box last night and got rid of all those baffles under the filters, so now its all gutted out...then i was just planning on buying some K&N's and stick them in there.....this shouldn't hurt me to bad as long its just temperary, right? also, can somebody chime in here and tell me where i can get those 3 1/2" rubber connectors that people are usuing on there CAI...

You can also use plumbing PVC connections. The big ones for gutters/sewers.

I'm pretty sure that this conversation has already came up and from what I can remember, the stock camaro induction piece could handle 400hp.

really...maybe i'll be alright then and won't have to make a custom CAI...we'll see how it goes....i think gutting out my airbox will make a huge improvement...maybe i'll make the ram air setup outta it someday too..

air intake
Yep, I was part of this subject a while back. There are quite a few people on here making good power and still using the stock air intake, although I believe they are gutting them as Klumb15 referred to. I don't see myself making enough power to tax the stock intake atleast for a long time. So I did what was recemended, I found another lower plastic air intake from another Iroc, cut all the baffling out, (didn't want to cut on my original) then installed K&N filters. Some people get fancy and take some JB weld or similar and reshape the inside of the track where there are some sharp turns/rough transitions etc...but I didn't see the need for that on my car. I like the stock air intake myself also except for the fact that it sits on top of a hot radiator
I have noticed with mine after moving down the road for a few minutes the air intake is cool to the touch but if it idles for any length of time with the hood closed, the air intake gets hot in a hurry
no way around that unless you install something that gets away from the radiator like on the firebirds,,,,IE aftermarket cold air intakes. Although with those you have to relocate either the battery or the charcoal cannister, I can't remember which but I am not interested in moving either so I am sticking with the stock air intake on my Iroc. Just personal preference I guess. Larry.

alright I think i'm gonna stick with the stock one then...cuz i totally gutted it out, and now i got K&N's, and i don't think i'm gonna even make 400 horse...so I think i'll be alright....
That is a good point with the heat tho, however, think about it this way.....if you have a big metal cold air intake sittin in your engine bay, and you sit there, that is gonna get hot as hell too....and metal heats up quicker than plastic does....so really heat is gonna be a problem in both situations....theres no way around it....but yea i think i'm gonna stick with the stock y piece, that will save me some time and money....
