Changed intake and now does not start!
Changed intake and now does not start!
Hi guys,
I hope someone can help me out
. I put the edelbrock base plate and runners on my 305 TPI. While doing that i also cleaned the throttle body, IAC and the EGR. Now that all is back in place the car will simply not run. It starts and runs rough.
So, I made the IAC close completely then nplugged the conector t it. Fired her upp and tried to adjust idle. the minimum i could get it was 750 RPM in neutral. When i plug the IAC and fire her up it wont start....
I think it could be the EGR but i dont know.
If the timiing is slightly off would that cause very rough idle and stalling?
Also when i get her running the rpm go up and down, sometimes as low as 250 then back to 800.
Any suggestions are appreciated, I need to get her on the road and test what my $700 edebrock setup is good for
Thanks,
Sam

I am thinking here and still cant figure it out, i searched and still could not find anything. The EGR was fine before so why suddenly go bad? i guess it could hehe
The timing could be the problem, but i am sure it is app. were it was before. hmmm

Don't assume anything like that on timing. Disconnect the ESC and get a timing light on it before going any farther. Also verify the firing order (18436572) wasn't messed up when you connected everything back up (stranger things have happened!)
Well I did as hanes manual said and then took up te distributor and put it back down to point to cylinder #1. Car should have started right up but did not. It ran very poorly rpm was at about 200. I tried opening the throttle and that did not raise rpm but killed it.
I then thought okay maybe i am 180 degrees off. So i repeated the procedure and put it 180 degrees off what i first tried. Car cranked but never started. Also some smell developed and i swear i saw smoke in the engine compartment.
So I feel the timing is right but something else is bad. I did spray carb cleaner in the EGR when it was out and i am thinking that the dirt could have ended up sealing the calve or something.
The TPS is fine.
No one ever had simillar problem??

you're timing is still off.. check to make sure you didnt screw up the wires when you put them on... take a felt tip pen and write down all the #'s on the cap.. then go back and re-wire it again.
Well, here is the latest.
I tok my car to the local GM dealer to have it checked and done right. It turned out that my timing was as good as could be considering i did not have a timing light
They found a huge vacum leak from the driver side runners.
So i told them okay fix even though it would cost 240 in labour.
After lots of time they came to the conclussion that the actual runner wad at fault. both upper sides of both runners were machined to be bolted on to the right side (passenger side) of the plenum. So they called edelbock and discussed and finally told to call summit and let them know we talked to edelbrock.
The mechanic showed me the fit and it is that 5th small air passage hole that matches perfectly to the one side of the plenum but not to the left side.
I called summit and a new set of runners will be shipped to the dealer overnight and UPS will pick up the old ones and send back to them.
All fo free offcourse.

Just if anyone was interested to know....
The new runner set arrived and turned out to be the same problem. Basically that they were made to bolt onto the passenger side of plenum rather that be casted differently to fit to the driver side.
The gaskets are different for left and right plenum BUT the left one fits perfectly on both runners hehe
So, those are going back and I will be getting SLP runners tomorrow.
Atleast they are sending it by AIR
BIG PLUS to Summit Racing.
Anyway I cant wait to get her running again. Broooooooooom
I read online that slp with edelbrock yields more then edelbrock base plate with matching edelbrock runners but they might be wrong.

Good luck with that man.
I'm planning on replacing the intake manifold gasket. In your opinion, was it very hard? Also, I've read a lot of guides on it, but i'm not sure if you are supposed to buy new bolts.
Hope its running good again for you

It's not real hard. Actually, getting down to the manifold through all the vaccum lines and the TPI itself is harder than the actual manifold. Just make sure you use the correct tightening sequence, and plenty of RTV on the china wall.
...I'm not sure about the bolts, but I replaced all mine with regular hex head bolts. I HATE those darn star bit screws with a passion!!!
Grade 8s from Home Depot only cost about .60 cents each IIRC.
