ECM questions (VATS and VSS)

I'm converting to a 730 ECM and I have a few questions so I can better understand VATS and VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor?).

VATS: I see one wire coming out of the ECM for it. I realize VATS used resistance to activate some part of the ignition. Does that mean if I run the correct resistor to ground from there the VATS will be bypassed?

VSS: Does my 86 not have it? In the process of the swap I'm trying to figure out if I can have a 90-92 VSS and if there is any benefits to having one at all. Or if I can trick the computer to thinking there is one.

I just found the DFI and ECM forum, that'd probably be a better place for this.
