"Regular" 12-point heads? Those are actually fairly rare. If you can get 12-point headed bolts, they shoudl have no clearance problems since they are typically smaller than their 6-point counterparts. A regular 6-point (hex head) cap screw may present soem clearance issues, however.

Another alternative to the Torx button heads would be hex recess cap screws (Allen heads).

The original fasteners were Torx recess, button head cap screws. Flat cap screws are just that - Flat on the outer head surface with a 37° tapered underside.

12-points are available at any good hardware store, and many other sources. I mentioned they are "fairly rare" since they usually cannot be found at the stores that are displacing the local hardware stores across the country. The big box home centers aren't going to be able to help you, or possibly even understand what you might be asking for, whereas the old hardware store clerk would have asked "Plain, or plated, and how many?"

12-points should work just fine, so long as you can find them with the correct thread and length.

Watch the length, a couple will hit a push rod if too long. And a sealing washer isn't a bad idea either.
