Back Firing while trying to start.

Ok while i was taking my transmission out i figured i would go ahead and break my motor down to the block and redo all the seals while i was at it since the car will be sitting there for a while.Well here is the problem when i took the transmission out i had to turn the motor to get the torgue converter bolts and all that stuff well i had my distbutor out while doing this and i forgot to put it back in yes i know a dumb move so when i put my motor back together minus the tranny and i tired to start it well it went bang and then a rumble then a bang and black smoke coming out and it won;t fire. So does anyone have an idea how to correct the timing? Thanks.

Been there and done that one. First remove your driver side valve cover and watch the #1 intake rocker while rotating the engine. As you rotate the engine and the #1 intake rocker goes down then back up and fully closed that is TDC on the #1, look at the balancer and make sure the timing mark lines up at 0. Grab the distributor and have the rotor facing the #1 terminal (hopefully you marked the distributor before removing it where #1 is or the front of the engine?) assuming you remember where #1 is on the cap. Turn the rotor about a 1/4" to the left and drop in the distributor and when fully seated into the engine the rotor should be pointing pretty close to the #1 terminal. Also you'll have to align the oil pump drive pin with the slot in the bottom of the distributor with a screw driver. It should fire up and then just time the engine with a light.
