Alright, got her running -- Sorta

Hey guys!

Finally got my truck to fire up after putting a new ECM in! Woohoo!

Only problem is that the truck will not idle, and is running extremely rich (rich enough that my pipes are putting soot on the wall beside them)

I think it is a timing issue, as if I majorly advance it (like 32 degrees initial timing) it will idle extremely high, like 2500 - 3000 rpm, and if you back the timing back down to around 0 where it should be (this is all with the override plug undone) the vehicle will immediately die.

Basically, with the timing at 0 degrees, and a guy starts it, it runs on the cold start injector's supply of fuel, then just stops. Kinda like an old carb, where it would run on the pump of gas the accelerator would put in, but not otherwise. Whereas she will run at 2500 rpm, less some popping out of the exhaust, so I am fairly sure it isn't an injector issue.

Anyone have any thoughts on the matter? I'd like to be able to get the truck to idle about 800 rpm or so...

Other issue I am having - When I put a jumper between the serial data wire, and ground, the ECM does not flash any codes for me (not even code 12) The serial data wire is the white and black one, and the ground is black and white. This is a brand new reman ECM, so I am fairly sure it shouldn't be acting up...

For the idle issue, it sounds like a major vacuum leak. Check and make sure all the runner bolts are tight, all gaskets are good, and that everything is hooked up properly. Did you hook up the vacuum line that runs to the brake booster, and are you using the carcoal canister? If not, you should cap off the vacuum ports that are on the TB.

Hope that helps some!

I'll take another look tommorow, but I am pretty sure I should be in the green as far as vac leaks go. I just put brand new gaskets on moments before attempting to fire it up. My biggest problem is that I cannot get the truck to run long enough to actually check for vac leaks.

I also discovered that the ECM issue is related to the aftermarket chip I had Brian Harris at tpichips.com make up for me. I put a chip from a 2.8 S-10 truck with a `165 in, and it actually ran a bit better than the chip Brian had made. I think that may be a reason behind the truck running so poor. I sent him an email, and I'll see what he thinks.

That seems like more of an issue to me than anything else.... If the computer won't even acknowledge "Service/Test Mode" there has to be some kind of wiring problem.

*** I hope I don't have this kind of problem when I upgrade my fullshize to Tuned Port

nah, I just have this guy named Murphey that follows me around all the time, constantly messing stuff up on me when I sleep

Most people have their TPIs fire right up right away, but I bought mine off a fairly dubious seller off ebay, so I've had some issues with different things.

Hopefully get her running fairly nicely fairly quickly. As far as I can tell, my ECM is just fine, its probally just the chip that is messed up on me.

My engine isn't all that built either, totally stock less an XE262-H cam, headers, 2.5" true duals, and the TPI. I know that the TPI won't like the lobe seperation on the cam, but it idles pretty smoothly, so the MAF should be able to account for most of it with the modifications that Brian did on the chip. I am definitely expecting some surging in the idle, but I think the thing should definitely be able to run better than this. As it stands, if I set the timing way up, I can get it to run at like 2500 rpm, and if I try to rev it, the thing will usually just die right away, but one time I was able to get it to rev to about 4500 rpm, however, the exhaust popped a whole lot on the way back down (very sweet sound to my ears regardless!)

For all I know, may just plop a new chip in there, set the timing and minimum air, and have it run perfectly, but for right now, it is in need of some work, lol
