Fuel pressure Gauge
Fuel pressure Gauge
I just bought an 88 z28 not running. So I sprayed a little contact cleaner in the throttle body and it starts and runs for a second till it burns it and then cuts off. I was going to check the fuel pressure but my gauge is for a schrader valve.
What do I need to look for to check the pressure. I think it is on the pass. side of the motor on the rail it looks like a capped connector.
What size is that? Do I need an adapter or do I have to buy a gauge just for it?
Thanks in advance!

Welcome to TGO robards. Although i do not no the size of the connector you are asking for. You can get a fuel pressure gauge at probably Auto Zone, Advanced Auto or the the Pep Boys. I picked one up at the Pep Boys last year and it's a direct fit (if i remember right it came w/ two seperate size fittings and you just use the one that works for your application). Cost me about $30 bucks. You might want to get yourself a noid light also while you're there, they're only about $6 bucks and come in handy when checking to make sure you are getting a pulse at the injectors, something else you might wanna check in your situation.Good luck!
Thanks so much I will do right away! Thanks for tip on the injectors too. I don't think I hear the fuel pump coming on though.
Does the fuel pump fire for a second or two when you turn the key to run just prior to starting, or does it only fire when the key is in the start position and then the motor takes over when running?
As you can tell this is my first Camaro. I was a Turboford guy but got tired of it.
Thanks again!

when you turn the key to the run position, you should hear the fuel pump hum for a few seconds then hear a click from one of the relays that's located right near the brake booster. If you don't hear it come on, the first thing to check is the fuel pump relay (and the fuse for it). The fuel pump relay is the rectangular shaped one mounted to the firewall on the drivers side.
Now even if the relay is bad, the car should eventually start if you let it crank long enough. The reason for this is that once the oil pressure reaches a certain point, the oil pressure switch works as a backup relay to turn on the fuel pump. I found this out after my T/A took forever to start and I did some research to find out it was just a bad relay. Good luck with it. Post back with your findings.

Kind of a bad pic, but you get the idea. You can mount a fuel pressure gauage on the fuel rail like this.
