MAF relay wiring issues (sorry kind of long)
Okay, here it is, I have the dreaded code 36, yesterday I did a search and found a ton of useful information but I still have a question or two. My car is a 1987 IROC with a 305 TPI computer, the engine has been changed to a bit more crazy 355 with lots of Intake, Head, Valve Train and Exhaust work. When I changed the motor I used a new chip, knock sensor and injectors to go with new engine and until last week I've had 25,000 problem free miles on the new setup.
I have a few questions, first someone stated when you get code 36 you car will go to "limp home mode" or run's poorly. Well mine shows no difference, I still get 24 mpg when I drive home on the highway and no apparent loss of power. I was wondering if any one could shed some light on that.
Also yesterday I used a picture posted on here showing the Fuel Pump, MAF, and Burn-off relays, however mine doesn't seem to be in the correct locations based on that picture. My relays are all next to the Brake booster but they seem out of order. Does anyone know what color wires go into each relay?
Does anyone know how long the relay should kick on to have a successful burn-off? I have a Snap On scanner, yesterday when I shut off the car and the scanner said that the Burn-off cycle was on, however when I went to start the car the SES light came on with the same code.
Lastly I should say that the code only comes up every couple times I start the car, but it's becoming more often.
Thanks for the help. ---- George

Okay at lunch I checked some wires
At lunch I checked the wires going into the three relays by the brake booster. I have two Relays with five wires running to them and one with four. (two Orange, one Blue with a white stripe and a black) From what I read yesterday the Burn-off relay has only four wires running to it and the others five. Is this correct because the relay with the four wires is the one right next to the fender. In Vader's pic the Burn-off relay the one closest to the booster. I'm all for buying a new relay and giving it a try but I don't want to try the wrong one.

Interesting
Okay, so if a weak or low voltage could cause this.... What is weak or low? I guess what I'm saying is, the car turns right over in the morning and fires right away so I'm guessing the battery is fine. I could check the power at the relays but is that where the low voltage can hurt me? Also is anyone able to confirm four wires going to the MAF burn-off relay?
Thanks for your help.
Thanks for your help.
I'm fighting the same problem. - I have a good wiring diagram, and it shows 4 wires running to the burn-off relay. 5 to the MAS relay, and 5 to the fuel pump realy though...

Thanks
Thanks Shagwell, that's the same information I had found.
I just wanted confirmation since some people have stated they switch the relay with one of the others to check it. I couldn't figure out how you would switch a relay with four wires with one that had five.
We'll see what happens, there is an auto-x this weekend so tonight I plan checking all of the conections and getting down to the knitty gritty, or something like that.
