need a good medium idle cam with power
guys i need a cam for my 383 the dude that built my engine put a 282/282 with 480 lift rv cam in it and it sux what is a good size cam that will work with my engine plus will work with a 700 r4 tranny with stock coverter
If you want to put a hot cam in there, that intake has got to go. General rule on TPIs, dont have a cam that comes to life in the RPM range, that the intake cant flow. I would not go over 212* or 214* @.050 on the intake. Even at that duration, I would at least go with a LTR set up, ported plenum, and base.

Its because that intake is choking it large, big cam works on high RPM and high RPM want lots of air.
Big cam's also have no real low RPM power, so with your intake wanting to make low RPM power and the big cam not, then no real power down low, then when the cam's wanting to make big high RPM power, your intake choking it and not alowing it to, so its missed matched, thus means a slow car.
I ran the comp XE256H in my old 383 with the Bone Stock TPI on top, dyno'd 271.3rwhp and 400.1rwtq, and produced all the power under the famouse TPI wall (4500rpm)
Basicaly if ya want any more power then that your gunna have to start changing whats on top and match a cam to it, a HSR is a good bang for the buck mod up there.
