Thoughts on this cam??

Hi guys,

I'm looking to get everyone's opinion on how this cam would work with my setup. The car is my '89 GTA using the StealthRam intake & AFR 195 heads, full exhaust, etc. Cam specs are:

Dur. @ .050 226/234
Lift 525/532
LSA 110˚

Thoughts, comments?

Can you do your own chips, and with a wideband? It'll rumble a bit with that tight LSA and duration (and be a little difficult to idle smooth in closed loop). You probably don't have emissions to worry about, do you (is that Denver area?)? IF you do, that's likely too much cam. If not, It's doable, but you'll be running out of MAF at full throttle + high RPM. Then you can either over compensate your PE or go MAP/SD.

Should get you plenty of power though (what's your compression ratio - hope for 10.5 or more at that altitude and cam). You might not need a split duration cam though - the head's exhuasts flow well, and you have headers + exhaust (hope it's more than just a single 3" though).

with RednGold86Z. Looks pretty good for a non-emissions cam, but it'll be a bit tricky to tune. Should make good power though....

OK, thanks guys, that kinda backs up my initial impressions. I do have to deal with emissions, so that pretty much kills that thought...

It's kind of a bummer, because this is the first time I've been able to get a recommendation from one of the cam companies based on what I'm hoping to do. Ah well, I'll keep at it!

Thanks for the replies!

I agree with the above in that it will work. Be prepared to get a higher stall torque converter. By the way there are people here in our club in Southern California running similiar cams and passing California emissions. You will need a good tuner. MadMax is running the 230 degree XFI cam. Vincent is running a 226 degree cam and no problem with passing emissions. Ken has the 224 degree XE cam.

Have fun getting the idle fuel mixture right with that much overlap. I had a 232@0.05 cam and it would idle off of the narrow band O2's useable range, reading 0.00 all the time at idle. My new split pattern 219/229 cam does the same. I am still messing with the O2 bounds and the MAF tables to get the fuel mixture at idle right.
