Problems with 89 tpi

My 89 camaro 350 tpi is having some problems. The car ran just fine up to about 2 nights ago, when I got a check engine light, the car wouldn't idle right, weak brakes, and it wanted to die. Another thing it was doing is when the car was floored, it cut out for a brief moment, then ran again.

I put a new fuel filter on. This helped the car alot. I let the car idle in my driveway for about 20 minutes and everything seemed fine again. I took it for a little drive. The car cuts out when it gets 3/4 to full throttle, and I keep getting a code 45 which is oxygen sensor rich. I took it back home, and now it idles rough again. The engine will slow to about 600 rpm, then up to 900 or 1000 every few seconds.

What's going on with my car?

I'd start with retrieving codes stored in the computer. From what you described it could be anything. Run a paperclip from the a and b terminals in the diagnostic port under your dash. Then turn the key on and count the flashes. We should be able to help you from there.

Have you checked your fuel pressure? I would check for a leaking injector. Also try unpluging your brake booster from the back of the intake and cap the hole, you might have a bad brake booster causing a vacuum leak.

Sounds like you might have a injector shorting out and possibly dumping a lot of fuel into the engine. Try checking the injectors with an ohm meter. i think the readings should be between 15-17 ohms. any thing below that is bad. i had an 89 formula 350 that did the same thing and it was one injector reading 6 ohms.

Or possibly the the CTS is gonig out and it is thinking the engine is cold and dumping way more fuel in than it needs

EGR

Check your EGR valve. If you have one that is sticking, it will run rich. Had the same problem with a 350 before. Cleaned up the EGR and all the richness went away as well as a really rough idle and lots of black smoke! All cleared up. I know they are a pain to check on TPI but may be worth your while to look into it. If you have enough room play around with it while the car is running and see if it makes a difference. Good luck

Multecs are good for that is they sit for long periods of time. Not sure what the history is of your car, but that sucks either way.

If your car sat for a while check your injectors like they said above

I didn't get a chance to check fuel pressure today as I had to work all damn day.

The only sitting the car really did was from december up to about a week ago. I've owned it for a year.

I am going to clean the EGR valve up tomorrow and order a fel-pro plenum gasket set while im at it.

I put one of those injector test lights on a couple of the injectors, and the computer seems to be firing them. Doesn't say much, but atleast I know it is trying to work.

If I end up having to put injectors in it, what should I go with?

Brendan

Look on Ebay for the injectors, you wont go wrong with Bosh or Ford SVO injectors.

take the injector clips off one at a time if it runs better on 7 while one is off then you know one is grounding out

I unplugged the injectors individually and drove it. The culprit is the #2 cylinder injector.

What should I do now, buy a single new one or a whole set?

I would replace them all if possible, The factory Multecs just plain suck. besides you don't want to have to go through this again in a few months.

Check your fuel pump voltage. I will bet it is on its way out.

Get a whole set, don't change just one. But anything you get other than the factory 22 lb ones will require a custom PROM with the right injector constant. Unless you can get a new set off 22 lb'ers. Good luck, at you know where your problem lies now!

Before you replace any injectors, put in a new O2 sensor, It's cheaper and may just solve your problem, especially if it has never been replaced before.
