rebuild or buy new?

Hello I'm new to this site. I jest came across a 1985 Limited Edition Trans Am. 305 TPI with an auto w/stage 2 shift kit. The guy I got it from drove it about 10 miles with a dropped piston and it needs a rebuild. Not sure if it'd be cheaper to rebuild or buy new motor.

I would go ahead and remove the engine and inspect the condition of the block before making a decision wether to rebuild or buy new. IMO get rid of the 305 and get 350

it has about 80,000 on it. i'm pretty sure he rings are fried cause he ran it out of oil and the piston dropped yet he still drove with it dropped.

It sounds like that motor already has three strikes against it.

It was run without oil

itnwas run with a broken piston. (or worse)

It's a 305.

Grab a rebuilt 350. Sometimes a local engine builder will have a shortblock already prepped. It was rebuilt over the winter when it was slow.

Under the circumstance you've discribed, if it was me, I'd get a rebuilt 350

After the rebuild it's probably a 355 now.
