TPI code 42 & 43

I have a '87 305 TPI that I have put in a '41 Chevy coupe. It has a Painless speed density harness. All of the changes required per the Painless manual were made. I also have a 730 computer out of a Camero that had a 305 TPI. My problem is that the motor floods when I try to start it and I get codes 42 & 43. I had a mechanic check it out, he said his meter showed 722 deg. of spark advance ( I know that is impossible). If I disconnect the fuel pump after it pressurises the fuel system I can start the motor and it will run until the fuel pressure is gone. This is my first experience with fuel injection, it hasn't been without alot of frustration. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me.

Code 43 is usually a bad knock sensor. Did you change it to a new 305 knock sensor for a speed density setup when you converted? The old MAF 305 knock sensor is not the same.

Code 42 is set when the engine is running at 600 rpm or greater, and there is no pulse from the white wire that runs between the ECM and ignition module in the distributer for more than 200 milliseconds. Often the problem is a broken, frayed, or otherwise damaged wires such as the tan/black, purple/white, or the white wire that run between the ECM and Distributer.

Rick, thanks for the reply. When I changed over to speed density I had use a 730 computer. The Painless Wiring manual gives a detailed list of what needs to be changed in order to do the change over to speed density.

Russell, thanks for the reply. I did buy a new knock sensor for the speed density motor. I haven't plugged it in yet, no place to mount it with the block hugger headers. I'll try just plugging it in and see if the code 43 goes away. Should it be grounded to the block?

I'll check and see if my ECM to Dist. wires are cut or broken. The painless wires are smaller gauge than the GM wires, I may have cut one.
