fuel sending unit

my gas gauge quit working on me and a buddy of mine said it was my fuel sending unit. is that really the problem? and if so, is it outside or inside of the gas tank? thanks in advance you guys!

Axle/Gears: Weak 7.5 with 4.10s
The sending unit is common to fail on third gens. They are in the tank and they are a pain to change. They can range from $250-$350. The rearend has to drop and most of the rear suspension has to come apart. I replaced mine about two months ago because my guage quit.
