Jerking at > 3000 RPMs

The other night, I waited a ridiculously long time for construction - just idling when all of a sudden the car died. I tried starting it and it just kept cranking but never catching and firing (except for the first crank which it caught and died right away).

I pushed it to the side, waited, tried starting, waited, tried starting etc. But no dice. After about 3 hours, I turned the key and nothing happened so I gave up.

The next morning, she fired up fine but I noticed that after about 3000 RPMs, it jerks (like its not firing or getting fuel every few seconds). This happens mainly on the highway, but it will also do it in 1st gear. I read the other post with similarities but I'm not getting any loud sucking noises (other than from the cold-air intake) so I figured they were unrelated similar issues.

Any ideas guys?

I did notice that on the driver-side header near the firewall that there were some cuts with a white line showing (guessing the cable) so could it be shorting out? I tried turning it and will try it later but that still doesn't explain to me why it died out in the middle of the road and wouldn't start.
