Trouble getting to the injectors...

Hey guys, I've been trying to replace my injectors on my 91 TA and have come to a stumbling point. I know there is a good tech article about this, and I've read it, but still have some questions.

First off, I can't get the runners off the base manifold. I've gotten the 'hidden' bolt, and all others that I can see but still a no go. There are 6 bolts? 4 on the outside, 2 on the inside? Anything else?

I then removed the 4 bolts on the fuel rail into the base. I also removed some smaller torx style bolts holding the fuel lines onto the rail. The rail is looking loose, but do the runners need to be off? What else needs to be removed to pull it off?

I really don't want to have to loosen my alternator bolts and reduce the tension on the serpentine belt blah blah blah to do it... is that possible?

I just did this (actually not finished yet)

I think there are 2 inside bolts (20 total I believe)- one on each side with the drivers side being at the back (near distributor) and the passenger one being at the front. Once you are sure all bolts are off you may need to tap on it with something to get it loose. Also note there are 3 bolt lenghts.

I was able to get the fuel rail out (3 x since I'm new at this :-( ) without messing with the alternator, etc... I had to remove the fuel line clamp on the other side of the alternator to wiggle the fittings out of the way to remove the bolt to the manifold.

Good Luck.

What do you mean exactly here? Where is that bolt to the manifold? Did you have to take any bolts off from the fpr? Did you have to slide any of the fuel lines out from the rail? I can take some pics if you can mark the places you're talkin about

You're likely to have a heck of a time getting the injectors out of the manifold. No amount of pulling turn or anything would get em out for me, so... I took an open end wrench, 5/8 I believe. This JUST fit between the manifold and the injector. Had to wiggle it a bit on a couple to get it under the injector. Anyway, once it was under there, almost like it was a bolt you were going to turn, I just pried up on the wrench holding the injector and pop, pop, pop. Each came out with NO hassle.

Make sure you're getting the semi hidden bolts on the outside. Some are at the bottom near the manifold "under" the runners and one in the FAR back bottom corner on the drivers side and one in the FAR front passenger corner. Pretty much under the TPS/TB coolant plate hose. Those can be hard to see. Also, look at your new gaskets. Those should tell you right where each bolt will be so you can double check.

One extra thing. The gasket have lil nubs on them that fit into the manifold, so if the gasket with age is welded onto the runner, pulling up won't work. I found I had to bend mine down towards the valve covers from the top to pop them loose. You WILL need gasket remover or you're gonna be spending a month trying to scrape off the old gaskets.

I got the drivers side runner & fuel rail off with that side of injectors... I was missing 2 runner to base bolts that were hiding.

I STILL cant find the passengar side runner bolts. And the fuel rail is next to impossible to take off without the runner off unless I unbolt the fuel lines. Should I just do that? I read I need a flare nut wrench... but I dont have one. Best idea would to get that other runner off

To remove the passenger half of the fuel rail, you are really going to want flare nut wrenches. I'm no expert on what happens when you use regular wrenches, but I'd guess you can strip them pretty easily. Also, you are going to need to remove the bolt holding the fuel line bracket to the front of the block. That one can be a real pain as there is little room to move and once the bolt gets most of the way out it seems to bump against the fuel lines. You can try using 2 regular wrenches on the fuel line fittings, but if you round it off, you're gonna be in a world of hell getting it off then.

Other things... since you are disassembling the entire thing, you are really going to want a set of fuel rail orings and fuel line orings. When I took mine apart, they were in lousy shape and I wouldn't have wanted to use them again. Also, unless the runner is stuck on there, you must have missed a bolt somewhere. 1 on the inside heading out and the rest from the outside heading in.
