Post sound clips of over 0.500" roller cams in

Hi guys, I'm looking to pick out a retro roller cam to use in a 355 4 bolt chevy I will run with Iron Eagle 200cc runner heads, with my Holley stealth ram.

I am looking for a cam that will make big big streetable hp. My stealth ram is good to 6000+ rpms, so I'm not confined to the typical tow truck rev range TPI intakes. I don't want it to be a peaky revvy motor like my 327 is though. I'd like a 1500-5500 power band with peak hp between 5500 and 6000. I am also looking for a fairly smooth idle. It doesn't have to be a stock idle. I tune my own chips and will be tuning with a wideband. However, my current hydraulic old fashioned cam has a very choppy idle that makes the car reek of gas fumes. I am looking for some sound clips, and recommendations. I have seen from a little over .500" gross lift to .575" roller cams recommended for the type of use I am looking for. I need a 113 or 114 CL to make the computer happy this time. Let's see watcha got.

My LPE219 cam 219/219 560/560 112 Cam doesnt sound like a monster engine but it has a slight lope to it. Your going to want to re-ask the question but add in duration instead. Duration and lobe seperation is where you will notice a differannce in sounds. I've run this cam with a TPI Setup, Superram setup, miniram setup, 350 and now the 383. Its a great cam, good mileage and passes e-check still.

Just reading your post, dont get a comp XFI280 or anything similar, probably a bit too smelly and choppy for ya.
I have a sound clip if you really wanna hear it.

Sure madmax, I have never really paid attention to what bigger roller cams sound like. I'd very much be interested. Here's what my "too smelly" hydraulic idles like.

That's with the stealth ram efi. It is stable and will idle all day like that but it is a dirty idle. I'm sure a roller is going to be better than this

TBI 305 project. Ported ZZ4 heads, Crane Extreme EFI retrofit roller cam, Performer RPM intake, 454 TBI, 68# injectors @ 32 PSI, 1 3/4" X 3.5" headers, 3" duals, Flowmaster 50 series Delta flows, EBL used for the Dyno runs.

Care to guess the HP/TQ output and the rpm for peaks?

Basically this is my Van's old shortblock, with the latest corvette aluminum heads (ported at that), and a fairly radical EFI oriented camshaft, with monster headers, and a good intake. HP peak is over 6,000! This is going into my S15 GMC Jimmy.

Here are the cam specs

Comp Xtreme EFI retrofit roller P# 280XFI-HR13
Advertised -280*/288* Duration
.050--------230*/236* Duration
Lift(1.6:1)--.576"/.570"
LSA---------113*
ICL---------108*

I really appreciate the sound clips, this is very good information for me to have! Keep it coming, anyone else who has sound clips of over 0.500" lift roller cams.

The XFI 280 is pretty aggressive idling. Fast355 and madmax, does the cam idle without smelling like gas fumes? Do you have cats? Are you burning your own chips?

This is just what you want,

www.zerotactic.net/uploads/videos/383startup.WMV

its the comp cam 230/236 duration 510/520 lift but it has 1.6 rockers so its like 540ish lift. 110 lsa.

I thought idle quality was more a product of duration and overlap/LSA as opposed to lift.

Traviz, I won't use that cam because it is on a 110 LSA. I need a 113/114 LSA. I am running a 110 LSA cam right now and the O2 does not read it properly at idle. The wider LSA will also make the idle quality better.

Thats why I said you probably dont want it. I havent been able to tune out the idle fumes completely. Its terrible when its cold, when it warms up its not so bad but I'm still not entirely happy about it. I make tweaks here and there and it helps some but its not there yet.

What do you have for an exhaust setup in that vid?
Sounds clean when revved.

duration and overlap/lsa play more in idle quality than lift.

Custom.
1 5/8" headers into 2.5" collectors, 2.5" to a short Y/merge, 3" over the axle and I think at that time through a Flowmaster and 2.5" dual outs. Have since changed the muffler to a Dynomax Ultra Flo, its a little quieter but there's no more drone.

Yea, just listened to it again, that was the flowmaster.

Crane Cams Powermax 2050 in my little 305. it's not a roller cam though, didn't notice "roller" in the thread title initially.
