Help! Need to buy a new distributor from Summit Racing. Which one?
Hi there,
I need to buy a new distributor for my 1989 GTA with the 350ci TPI engine, and I need to be able to buy it from Summit Racing as I'm ordering a 'batch' of parts from them in the next week.
Will this model work?
Summit Part No:- MSD-8366.

http://www.msdignition.com/dist_2.htm
Is this a small cap HEI distributor? Or a large cap model?
Many thanks for any help you can offer!
Gordon

If you want to waste money it'll work. I personally would just put a new cap, rotor and internal pickup coil on your stock one and be done

I am running the MSD unit. Very nice piece. After I put it in I the noticed car started much easier and had a smoother idle. You may want to order it from JEGS it is cheaper. Only 262.99 at Jegs. Or at least have Summit price match it.

If you really think about it, theres only 2 things in the distributor. The rest is cosmetic. Pickup coil and ignition module. To the one who spent 269, yours started faster probebly due to an 12 dollar pickup coil inside the distributor. Unless your shaft is bent, gear is shot or something else major, your current one with 80 bucks for a rebuild and it'll work like new.

Thanks Burnout. As I said, I have to get the products from Summit but I'll get them to price match it.

Thats a good reason then!! If you do a search from a while back ,there was a batch of users who complained about he MSD unit in conjuntion with the Edelbrock base and inproper fitment. May want to look into it if using that base.

the shaft that you see on the outside is not what turns.
I am all for rebuilding the used one. check for excessive end play and get a new gear, module, pickup-coil and clean it all out really good
for the money rebuild

Well since I am an uptight guy and need everything new (dont worry about money its my money) I am buying the HEI cap and rotor kit, I HAVE msd wires, buying ac delco iridium plugs, msd billet alternator at 130amp (am installing alternator underdrive pulley so thats why I'm buying 130amp), MSD 3hp brute starter, optima battery (red top). Sounds like a BOMB *** ignition to me. Thats what I am going with and will tell everyone how the car runs..........................................................

i've got that MSD unit as well. It is a very nice looking peice. I personally wouldn't buy one, too expensive, but I got mine when I sold my 86 Trans Am for parts and cash. The HSR intake and MSD dist. that I got in the trade were brand new so I just put them on my Formula.

Ignition coil, ignition module and the pick-up coil which is in the center of the distributor. It connects itself to the ignition module via the white and green wires under the cap. I live over in Independence and my GF with her procharged RS lives in bedford.
