help with sensors
Hi Guys,
When I bought my 89 GTA 6 years ago I was always on this web sight. Well 6 years have pasted and I have moved built a house and It is time to get back to the car, Yeap I kept it in a heated garage and worked on it now and then. I had the 350 reworked to a 383 and have had about everything else apart. Now the problems are starting in. I can not remember where all the sensors go. I have one in the the right head for the water temp gauge, I have one in the left head for the cooling fans. Where does the knock sensor go? Does the oil pressure sending unit go above the oil filter? I also have a hole on top of the block just behind the intake manifold.I think it had a plug in it but when the block was done all the plugs where taken out and I seem to have alot of extra holes. Any photos drawings or help is needed. I had everything tagged when I took it apart but during the moves some tags fell off. Thanks. Oh yea also how do I tell right and left motor mounts apart? One has a RH stamped on it and the other is plain. Is it that simple RH is right side?

I'm in the middle of getting rid of all my TPI stuff and the oil sending unit I think is on the block in the rear. I'm trying to figure out what the sensor above my filter was and the one that was in the back of the pan??? Best idea is to do a search first than ask. Lot of people don't answer sometimes b/c there is plenty of info on this forum to spend countless hours of learning. Good luck!!!!

First, you have to figure out if you have an "oil pressure sending unit and switch" combination, or a seperate sending unit and an oil pressure switch.
If you have a seperate oil sending unit, it will be beside the distrubutor on the back of the block and will be a PITA to change in the driveway! That is how my 88 is setup but I hear GM changed to a combo unit sometime after 88. If you have the combo unit, your in luck and it should be easier. You don't have to drain the oil, and the unit is easy to get at being just above the oil filter.
On my 88 the sending unit is beside the dist. and the switch is just above the filter. The switch is responsible for telling the computer that there is oil pressure and has nothing to do with the oil pressure gauge. It's job is to allow the fuel pump to run if the fuel pump relay ever quits. The combo unit does both jobs.
So make sure your replacing the right unit.
Okay, just found that. Hope that helps some. It did me and now I'll search for my oil pan sensor. I'm sure it's all computer controlled and now I don't have to worry about all that

knock sensor goes on the passenger side just above the oil pan just behind the motor mount.
fan switch goes in the passenger side head.
water temp guage goes in the drivers side head.
"oil pan sensor"......?????????????? never heard of a sensor in the oil pan.
