When I had the stock '88 IROC 350 5.7L is was 6°, book shows that for 84-90 multiport fuel injection. There should be a sticker on the under side of the hood, yours could be different.

it is 6*. Dont disconnect the two connectors by the dis. it'll never start. you need to disconnect the tan pigtail wire on the passenger side strut mount area. located in the loom. Its around the blower motor area.

so turn on the car and disconnect that tan wire.. .. i think i can get away with all this just by adjustin the **** on the MSD adjustable timing control .. this is what is causing me to do all this.. so i just need to see if its actually workin .. i never really took out the distributor to retard it .. just configuration with this box...

You want to set the timing control to 0. Then go under the hood, disconnect wire, then start up and put the Dis at 0. After that turn car off, connect wire, fire it up and move the **** to 6. All set then.

Very perceptive. The code is being thrown because the ECM figured out it can't control the timing with that wire unhooked. It'll clear when you restart the car with the wire connected.
Mkos has the procedure right.

you dont set the distributor to a degree, you turn the distributor till the marks on the balancer/crank pulley show whatever degrees you want with the aid of a timing light.
6 degrees is stock base timing... some cars like 8-10 tho
