5,7 TPI Runs Rough

Hi I
have a 88 GTA with about 70t miles
I have a problem, when I start it up it both idles and runs rough
It gives a lot of black smoke so it´s getting too much fuel
However when I start and turn it of several times (about 5-20
times) suddenly it starts as it should and I can drive for the whole day then when I turn the engine of ,then it starts all over again. The whole thing started after I almost run out of gas. Maybe I got to much dirt into the filter, maybe just a coincident. First it was enough to restart the engine a few times now I have to restart about 20 times before it runs OK (then it runs really good) .Havent done anything to the car yet. I´am in Finland Europe
and knowledge of these kind of fuel injections here is not very good
not to talk about parts. Where should I start have anybody had any similar problems

change the fuel filter and see if that fixes anything, they are only bout $3-$4 so it is cheap and easy. If that dosent fix it start with the basics, tune up, check fuel pressure, check and adjust all sensors. Is the check engine light on?

If your starting it up, and it runs rough and throws out black smoke, I'd bet you have leaking injectors or a bad FPR. I had the same problem and my injectors were dripping fuel when my car was turned off.

If he is restarting the car 10-20 times, the cold start injector is probley flooding the intake tract, hence the smoke.
----------
or it may have failed the cold start injector, herd when it fails it is really hard to start and runs like dukie till warm.

Could I just try to disconnect the cold start injector
No service engine ligth is on
It´s easyer to get it running smooth when the motor is still warm
(only a few restarts)
When it starts in the "rough" mode it starts up rigth away runs good for a
few seconds after that it is almost impossible to keep the engine running
It feels like its flooding ignition wrong or timing chain wrong
The fun thing is when it start in the "good" mode I can drive anywere
for as long as I want and it drives like a dream(no smoke no missfire
idles smooth has all the power)

That difenetley sounds like a dead cold start injector, and i dont think they are made any more. If you just pull it out, it will do the same thing. You have 2 choices, try to find one at a junk yard, or get a bin out of a 89 ecm, it is trhe same as an 88 but no cold start, just adds more fuel to the other injectors when cold. sorry for the bad news.
