cali members! need help with emmisions!

ok, i have a tpi motor and tranny from a 85 iroc, and im putting it in a 86 car. i know cali smog says that the engine has to be the same year or newer than the vehicle your putting it in.... but how can a smog ref tell between the 85 tpi and say a 86 tpi? do they hook up a computer to get the readings that tell them if everything is working? and will that tell them the year? if so, how can i change that? will a prom from a 86 work in my 85 computer? please help!!!! thanks

It will fit and run with no problems. Just use your old computer and emissions.

You have to contact the Smog referee to see what you need to put on the car to make it California compliant. I'm putting a LS1 and a 6 speed into a 82 Corvette and it now has to meet 2001 emission standards. The car has to be inspected after it's finished by the referee before it can be certified by the state of California.

Best idea is to ditch the 85 electronics, they suck anyway. Go with something newer and just tell them its an 86 drivetrain.

'85 and '86 computers are completely different and not compatible. As Madmax said, the '85 stuff is horrible, so you will want to get your hands on some 86-89 computer stuff, or 90-92 computer stuff. The hardware is all similar enough, its the computer that they will be checking.

im getting confused now! i was told the motor and tranny were from a 85 iroc... i ran the block numbers.. it came back as a 80-85 305 block, seems right. but now i just looked up the ecm number, 1227165 and it says that it is a 86-89 ecm! im like wtf is going on, maybe the person that owned the car upgraded it? i guess i should see if the wiring harness has the right computer plugs and such, what are the differences in the wiring harnesses? thanks

Yea, sounds like the ecm was changed. Could have been a dealer job too, I heard of them doing that with 85 cars... or you got a mix+match, something even more likely.
