TPI VSS and Tremec

I am putting 91 speed density unit on a 350 sbc equiped with a Tremec TKO600 five-speed. I need a 4 pulse signal to the ECM. Problem is that Tremec has Ford speedometer output gears so GM senders won't bolt up. Advice appreciated from anyone who has experience. Tremec sellers seem to know amazingly little about this issue. (Tremec has a 17 pulse electronic output which I have used for the Autometer electric speedometer with no problem, but it seems like it would be easier to mount VSS off the unused mechanical speedo output.)

Re: TPI VSS and Tremec

http://www.fortesparts.com/ has an adapter to use a stock T-5 VSS on the TKO. Some grinding is needed to clear one of the unused trans mount holes. You put the adapter in where the rubber plug is. When you call Fortes Parts ask for Mike he's a little hard to talk to but he's the one that deals with this stuff. Make sure you get the speedo gear for your gear ratio from him to.

Re: TPI VSS and Tremec

no need to go with Fortes adapter. I'll take pics of my setup tonight. I'm using an Autometer HAL Effect Speedo sensor where your showing your plastics plug. I did have to clearance the other arrow in your photo (tranny mount ear). Again, I'll post some pics. I'm sure there are other places to get the autometer part but I got mine with my transmission setup from 5speedtransmissions.com (An authorized Tremec dealer who buys from Mike Forte in MA).

Frank, are you using an electronic VSS signal? If so how did you wire it? I'm trying to compare my autometer wiring to another user.

Re: TPI VSS and Tremec

AC,
I did'nt have to do any special wiring. I just plugged in the stock connector to the t-5 VSS. Not sure if that helps you out or not.

Re: TPI VSS and Tremec

AC and Frank,
Thanks... I will look for subsequent pics. Re: the Autometer speedo, I am running mine off the 17 pulse magnetic output on the passenger side of the tranny (just hook up two wires). You push a button, drive exactly 2 miles, push the button again, and viola the speedo is calibrated! But that still leaves me needing a clean 4 pulses for the TPI and I think the best way to get it is off the mechanical output (on drivers side as you show). My TPI wiring provider says that I must NOT use the buffered output signal from the Autometer to feed the ECM. I have the right speedo gear already (yellow one). Thanks again... will check in later for more.

Re: TPI VSS and Tremec

AC,
Been to 5speedtransmissions.com and found the part you mention. You are saying use the TKO (Ford) to GM adapter, then bolt on the GM or Autometer sender to get the 4 pulse output. Correct?

Re: TPI VSS and Tremec

billydon, you're correct. My autometer sender is for sale in case your interested. I went with a stock T5 VSS sendor for wiring simplicity. Let me know if you're interested.
