From CFI to TPI
Hi
I'd like to make a conversion from Crossfire to TPI on my 83 Trans-Am.
My problem is that nobody here in France can make this perfectly. I got a great mechanic, but he doesn't know anything about TPIs.
The only man that can help me is a crook that breaks engines many times and tried to sell me a complete GTA brake set for $ 600 (yet I got 4 discs on my T/A). I'd like to avoid him. I just want my 305 to stay alive LOL
What is the A-to-Z process for converting a LU-5 305 into a nice TPI runner good for 6000 rpms ? I can get the Tuned Port set-up from a 86 Corvette engine, but since it doesn't have any neiman, I'm afraid the wiring is incomplete...
Thanks for any help !

Re: From CFI to TPI
I am doing this swap right now on my 82 trans am. I dont have an A-Z process written up yet, but I am considering doing this since there seems to be a lack of information on the forum for this particular swap. A haynes manual will be your most impartant tool in the swap. Also you may want to pick up a copy of cartech's tpi swappers guide. The process will vary depending on which year wireharness/computer you end up getting and what style engine management MAF or MAP you run. I am using an '86 MAF computer and harness setup for my swap. Feel free to ask any question you have in the mean time.

Thanks for the reply !
Yet, it didn't take a long time before I get lost... : )
What is MAF or MAP ? Where do you find these books ?
I plan to use a 86 Vette unit, so I imagine it will be close to what you use. The TPI unit is complete, but I don't know much about the wiring. I've been told that you needed the whole wiring TILL THE KEYS, is it true ? If yes, is it difficult to find a complete wiring ?
Thanks again !!!

Try www.chevythunder.com site. He has a great writeup on changing over to TPI.
I put my first TPI in a 37 Chevy several years ago using the info. I printed his site out on paper and made notebook to do my first change over.
Good info.

Yes that is an amazing site... TONS of helpfull info! You can probably find the tpi swappers guide and a haynes book on www.amazon.com
The vette harness should be very similar to the one i used. Get everything you can from it, including all the sensors and relays. It might be helpfull to snap photos of how the harness is connected in the vette before you pull it.
MAF = Mass Air Flow. MAP = Manifold Absolute Pressure. The MAF system uses a sensor in the intake duct to measure the volume of incoming air flow to determine engine load. The MAP system uses a sensor that reads manifold vacuum to measure engine load. Each system is essentially a different way to accomplish the same goal - Supply the engine with the appropriate amount of fuel.

Re: From CFI to TPI
Yes, the website is really fantastic !
But I didn't expect so many difficulties, it sounded as an easier swap to me.
For now, I'm gonna throw the CFI away and replace it with an alloy manifold and carb. I'll also get rid of EGR and Lambda sond, along with a new cam.
I'll see for TPI later. My carb will be topped by a H.O twin snorkel air filter. I believe this one is good for performance...
I keep the infos for future references and will keep you in touch.
Thanks guys !!!

Re: From CFI to TPI
I'm thinking there is something different about the heads on a cfi engine, even still they should work with a tpi manifold. Seems to me all you really need is to go on ebay, get yourself an upper, lower, and intake runner combo, a HEI distributor (if the cfi doesnt already have one), a MAF or MAP sensor, depending on what system you want, and the proper wiring harness, and ecm. Knock sensor, and ESC module too, and injectors, and higher volumn fuel pump......****, as I type this it gets to be more work than even I thought, LOL. Good luck!

Re: From CFI to TPI
The center holes on the TPI manifold has to be drill/slotted in order to fit the older style heads. I don't know the exact pattern that needs to be drill. I did the TPI converiosn on my 82 Firebird back in 98 using all new parts and an TPI injection system that was refrub by a company in Taxas. The system has been very dependable with very vinor problems. I have replaced the EGA valve once. I also started with an new engine when I did the conversion. If your V8 is old, then I would recommand getting the GM Goodwinch 350 and doing a complete build up. The website is http://www.fuelinjection.com/tpi.html.
