Axle/Gears: strange 3.73's
does tpi need vss?
i read somewhere that the tpi computer uses the vss sensor. is this true? also i am not sure if i have this sensor. i have a 91 with a 350 tbi in it with the 700r4 tranny. thanks -jon

The vss is a required piece. If you don't have one installed it will trigger an engine light, among other things.

Yes, the speed density TPI's use a 4000 pulse VSS unit. All 90+ Camaros use an electronic VSS (86+ on Firebirds). But I am not sure if the TBI's use a 2000 pulse or 4000 pulse, and then convert it to 2000 pulse.

All EFI cars use a VSS so the computer knows how fast the car is going. The 89 and earlier Camaros use a cable driven speedo, but the VSS is mounted behind the speedometer in the dash.
The 86 and up Firebirds use a VSS mounted in the transmission. The 85 and earlier Firebirds use a VSS in the speedometer with a cable drive, like the Camaros.
The 89 and earlier MAF cars use a 2000 pulse VSS.
