Re: my new cold air intake
how does that work better than what gm did?
It looks like when you close the hood the filter is still in the hot engine bay. My fathers mustang has a similar setup that actually goes in the fender to get only cooler air not heated by underhood air. If you had modified your tpi(cut the bottom out) air box and used kn filters when the hood was closed only cool air would have gotten to your intake. just curious on your thoughts?

Re: my new cold air intake
the stock 1987 is known to be the WORST setup for an fbody intake system and just about anything is an improvement. if the guy has opened the back of his cowl on his formula like me then there is a built in heat extractor and this will keep the temps under the hood WAAAY down and create an airflow under the hood to keep the area near the headlights (where his airfilter is) cooler than you would think.
here is my setup:

Re: my new cold air intake
i see. I have been through the same stuff myself and just bought a cowl hood and made it fuctional. The isolation of underhood air completely is the way to go. As your underhood temps are still hotter than you think but definetly an improvement.

Re: my new cold air intake
im still thinking on how to make more cool air to come into the engine without changing my formula hood. Im thinking of cuting the bottom were the filter is located and try to make a path for cold air to come in. oh here is a pic of my old stock intake THE WORST INTAKE EVER PUT ON A FIREBIRD
Re: my new cold air intake
without changing my formula hood
you make it sound like you have to cut the hood or something.. all you have to do is remove the 4 bolts in the pic below and the plate comes right off.. it is as simple as could be! then if you don't like it for some reason you can just bolt it back on.

Re: my new cold air intake
yeah i was just checking that out today and the guy emailed me and told me that it wudn't work. I was convinced otherwise. the only thing i dont like about it is where it connects right up to the TB but hey its only $50 as compared to SLP's $250 set up. I have room to play around with it.
Re: my new cold air intake
Inregards to the formula hood mod. We did that to my friends formula and it made a decent difference. Did you take both pieces out or just the solid piece? We left the mesh style one in for asthetics. Stupid GM. I still can't figure out why they did that.
In regards to CAI. I made mine out of 3" ducting from home depot and sealed it with a bit of silicone. Its pretty air tight. Not exactly the most beautiful CAI in the world but asides from the cost of the K&N filter the CAI cost me 2 bucks. We made the tube longer before the bend and instead of a 45 degree angle the bend is more like 10-15 degrees. We then cut a whole in the side of the engine bay so that the filter could be stuffed half way into the fender to get some cold air from outside the engine bay as well.

Re: my new cold air intake
I have a 90 formula and I plan to modify the stock air box. Gonna just cut a bigger hole in the side and weld on a matching pipe that runs to the fender opening. I can't really bring myself to buying an SLP kit, not much difference from what came stock

Re: my new cold air intake
As far as the heat. A simple mod for the time being is to cut two pieces of cardboard and put one near the side next to the radiator to block some of the heat from under the hhod, the second cut a piece to fit over the top of that piece and the top of your piping.
Also for the more adventurous I cut out the factory battery tray area so it could be a true cold air. i removeda piece of plastic underneath so it gets coldair from the air dam but doesn't pic up water since the filter sits on the bumper brace.
Hope that helps.

Too bad it doesn't go any further. My intentions are to cut a whole in that area and run my filter below.

Re: my new cold air intake
That is how I made mine. I had a local shop here in Illinois where i got the 3.5 inch aluminum piping and made it myself. Bought the 3.5 to 3 in couplers online to fit to the mass airflow though. Picked up huge gains over the the stock firebird pieces with the cone filter at the end.

Re: my new cold air intake
I found it at Behind Bars Race Cars in Lak in the Hills. They do custom turbo kits and roll cages. They have a web page and I can give you the number if you need it. I basically just bought two large 90 degree elbows which were huge so I had plenty of piping for it to go straight as well.

Re: my new cold air intake
That should fit your 85.
Cold unrestricted air going into your engine is always a good thing. I noticed a tenth at the track between hot air and a cold restricted air intake.
